1983 Senatorial election: Ojukwu loses first Senate election attempt. Mr Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu has failed to win the first election in his eight-month-old political career. It is one of the biggest shocks of the 1983 general elections, although it had been forecast. The news was broken first by a furious Mr. Adeniran Ogunsanya, NPP chairman, and confirmed hours later by FEDECO, thought to have been unnecessarily foot-dragging since Sunday. Mr. Ogunsanya had been furious because he felt the result, thought ready since Sunday, was being delayed to transfer the triumph to Mr. Ojukwu on whose imagined popularity the NPP is counting for a clean sweep of Anambra votes in all the elections. His protest letter to FEDECO chairman Victor Ovie-Whiskey hours before the official announcement contained scores which eventually turned out to be good speculation but smaller. The FEDECO score was: ONITSHA SENATORIAL DISTRICT: NPP (Edwin Onwudiwe) 148,354; NPN (Emeka Ojukwu) 136,144; GNPP (Joseph Alike) 1,764; PRP (Samuel Ewelaka) 1,385; UPN (Nzemeka Obah) 1,430; NAP (No candidate) 1,447. Mr. Ogunsanya's victory claim, based on the forms of vote certificates from polling stations, is that Mr. Edwin Onwudiwe of the NPP defeated Mr. Ojukwu by 15,875 votes. But this turned out to be 3,665 fewer than FEDECO's winning score. This publication is from 1983, Tuesday, August 23, 1983. He ran the election under the NPN. Zoom to read full news.

Arise TV anchor, Charles Aniagolu's question to Daniel Bwala is like a fly that perched on the scrotum - if you try to kill it, you will crush the scrotum; if you leave it, it will cause great discomfort. Nobody defends Tinubu and sounds sane. Watch.

I condemn in the strongest possible terms what the Kebbi State Government has done. This is an assault on democracy, political freedom, and the rights of opposition supporters. This building in question belongs to Abubakar Malami, SAN, the ADC gubernatorial candidate, who donated it to the Malami Pressure Group (MPG), an ADC youth support group in Kebbi State, to serve as its office ahead of the coming election. The building was scheduled for its official opening yesterday, only for reports to emerge that orders had come from the Kebbi State Government House for its demolition. What kind of democracy are we practising when a government resorts to demolishing an opposition support group’s office simply because it does not want to see its political opponents thrive? Is this the example they want to set for the younger generation? Is this what democracy has been reduced to in Kebbi State and Nigeria at large?Let me be clear, this is totally unacceptable, and we must not allow it to stand. No government has the right to intimidate, harass, or suppress the opposition simply because it fears political competition. Democracy is not the exclusive property of the ruling party, and Nigeria does not belong to the APC. And to the leadership of the ADC, enough of issuing press statements while our supporters are being subjected to what appears to be political intimidation. We are already in the campaign season. We have the constitutional right to organise, mobilise, campaign, and support our candidates. It is time to move beyond condemnation and take decisive, lawful action. Enough is Enough!!! Bola @officialABAT, your campaign spokesman has admitted that ministers paid billions in bribes to secure their appointments. You appointed them, so who received the money? Nigerians deserve names, not silence. Your government’s reckless decisions have driven the cost-of-living crisis. And when you withhold funds from ministries because you distrust your own ministers, Nigerians are left paying for a government that has abandoned them. -AA

I condemn in the strongest possible terms the brutal attack on comedian Osagie Daniel Idedia (aka Porkupyne), in Benin City, Edo State, and I state without equivocation that this was a politically motivated assault on a Nigerian citizen solely because he is my supporter and because he dared to demand good governance and accountability in Edo State. I hold Governor Monday Okpebholo @m_akpakomiza, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC leadership directly responsible for creating and tolerating a climate of impunity in which opposition supporters are beaten, maimed and terrorised. Governor Okpebholo must explain what happened to Porkupyne, stop hiding behind official silence and prove that his government is not shielding political thugs; President Tinubu and the APC must stop the brutalisation of my supporters and end the dictatorial arrogance of treating loyal opposition as enemies of the state. The police must urgently investigate allegations of political involvement, identify the perpetrators and expose whoever sponsored or facilitated this cowardly attack, because no Nigerian should be brutalised for refusing to support Tinubu, the APC or any governor, and no political party has the right to beat, maim or terrorise its way to power. I am formally drawing the attention of @amnesty @AmnestyNigeria and all foreign missions in Nigeria to this deeply troubling incident. They must closely monitor the treatment of opposition supporters, independently document politically motivated violence and demand accountability from the relevant authorities as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. I demand immediate justice for Porkupyne and protection for every Nigerian exercising the right to political choice and peaceful dissent. Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians, not to the APC, not to Tinubu and not to any governor who believes power gives him the right to intimidate citizens into submission. The APC must stop the brutalisation of my supporters now, and Governor Okpebholo and President Tinubu must demonstrate that their administrations will neither tolerate political violence nor shield anyone responsible for it. -AA

I watched an interview on #PoliticsToday* on @channelstv, anchored by @seunokin, in which the @OfficialAPCNg National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru (@DrSRJ), called me a “skit maker” and “comedian.” I am presenting here a photograph I took with Ajibola in 1998, when I led the Congress of Progressive Youths (COPY), and we were both in the trenches fighting against military dictatorship. What eventually happened to COPY offered an early indication of what Ajibola has become today, but that is a story for another day. His premise is that because Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT was declared "winner" by @inecnigeria in the deeply flawed 2023 presidential election, those of us who contested against him should somehow be ashamed of losing. Ajibola @DrSRJ came to the University of Lagos after he was expelled from the University of Ilorin in 1992 for student activism. I received him alongside Kunle Adegoke, popularly known as “K-Rad,” who is now a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). We provided them with an enabling environment to apply to re-enter the university, gain admission, and study Law at the University of Lagos @UnilagNigeria. Both eventually graduated with flying colours and went on to accomplish great things. The struggle for justice, democracy, freedom and the preservation of human dignity is neither skit-making nor comedy. Ajibola knows this because he was once part of that struggle and benefited from the solidarity of those who refused to surrender to military tyranny. It is unfortunate that he has become so carried away by the fleeting privileges of his current political position that he now ridicules the very struggle that helped shape his own future. But Ajibola should know better. Political appointments are temporary. Tinubu's regime will come and go, just like the military regimes we confronted in our youth. The principles we fought for in 1994 remain as relevant today as they were then. Our commitment to justice has endured for decades and will outlast his present political appointment. The struggle for freedom is not comedy. What is truly comical is watching yesterday's beneficiaries of resistance become today's defenders of the very oppression they once fought against. #RevolutionNow

ARISE NEWS RESPONSE TO INEC LAGOS STATEMENT Arise News has received a press statement from INEC Lagos State categorically denying our report aired this morning on What's Trending and stating that the display of the Register of Voters was conducted across all two hundred and forty-five registration areas in Lagos State including Alimosho and Shomolu. We take note of INEC's response and we respect the commission's right to provide its own account. However, Arise News stands by its report. Our findings were based on independent on-ground verification not social media posts or unverified claims. At the time of our confirmation on Tuesday, the INEC portal displayed a message stating there are currently no preliminary registers to display. In the Alimosho area, our investigation revealed the register was strictly available on request between 9AM and 3PM and residents were only allowed to check for their own names which falls short of the open public display required under Section 19 of the Electoral Act. Arise News acknowledges that INEC may have since rectified the situation and we welcome that. But the issues we reported were real and the public deserves to know. We remain committed to responsible accurate and independent journalism and we call on INEC to ensure that every Nigerian in every ward has full and open access to the voters' register as required by law not access by request, access by right!

Umahi’s Diversion Admission Vindicates My Stand on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road — Duke There is no Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. What we have is a Lagos Coastal Highway that will never get to Calabar. Minister Umahi’s comment on the terrain has vindicated me. Roads can be built in places like Bayelsa, but the terrain makes it prohibitively expensive. This project, from Victoria Island to Epe, is simply a land grab. Donald Duke, Presidential Candidate of the People's Redemption Party
