Hall of Fame Coach. Hall of Fame Human. 591 wins on the court. Countless lives enriched off of it. It’s rare in this day & age of college athletics for someone as accomplished as Coach Self to remain as grounded, selfless and quick to deflect praise onto others as he is and always has done. Even more rare is Coach Self’s unique and perhaps, unmatched ability to connect with people and almost instantly build them up in ways they’ve never felt before. He also makes everyone in his Basketball family - no matter what their role - feel like a key cog in the machine that is Kansas Basketball. Dajuan Harris just told me during postgame how much Coach Self has changed his life for the better. Juan’s story is certainly one of the very best, but he’s far from alone in the long list of folks who would say the same about what Coach has done for them. Tonight Coach became the winningest coach in the illustrious history of Kansas Basketball, and that’ll forever be one of the biggest bullet points on his first-ballot Hall of Fame resume, but as we celebrate that milestone and think back on our favorites of the 591, let’s be just as proud of the person we have leading this storied program. He’s always humbly called himself a mere “caretaker” of something much bigger than any one player or coach, and that’s absolutely correct, but I can’t think of a better person to entrust such a treasured tradition to, nor a better guy to work for, cheer for, or go to battle with. So many of us are forever better for having known him and that’s the unquantifiable piece of his legacy that just can’t be overlooked, nor undersold. Thank you, Coach and Congratulations!
