Have you ever wondered what the difference is between post-exertional malaise (PEM) & post-exertional symptom exacerbation (PESE) in myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.)? @sunsopeningband explains it in a clear and elegant nutshell.
PESE = symptoms worsen with exertion, says nothing about latency between onset and stressor nor recovery period PEM = delayed symptoms after stressor, prolonged recovery PEM is an energy problem. Signs/symptoms also may coincide with dysfunction in a number of other systems.

The CDC might take away a key data source on Long COVID and ME. You have until this Tuesday, October 20, to tell them why that would be a mistake. The advocacy group Solve ME has put together a script that people can use to leave a comment: solvecfs.org/cdc-me-cfs-long…

It's rare that an article about #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis trends on Twitter, so thanks to @KatieFalkingham for writing it and @BethDobbin for agreeing to be interviewed. Let's hope this leads to better understanding among doctors and the friends and families of patients. #r4today

Last month, Trump’s DHS asked its cyber division to try and a hack voting machines. BUT: -They directed them to NOT alert voting machine companies if flaws were discovered. Violating policy. -Order to only report directly to White House. That’s NOT typical at all!!
ProPublica: Trump Appointees Wanted a Voting Machine Hacked A few months into President Donald Trump’s second term, political appointees at the Department of Homeland Security made an unusual request of its agency focused on cybersecurity: Secretly acquire a voting machine and hack it. The appointees wanted the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to procure the machine, examine it and report back the findings so they could be given to the White House, according to two former administration officials with knowledge of the request. propublica.org/article/cisa-…

And imagine if FDR's reasoning was that Churchill was never beating the might of Germany, so why not get it over with quickly? This is why FDR is revered and Trump is reviled.

The Senators we elected this year will serve six-year terms. That means the Senators we elect in November have a choice: Allow an automatic 22% cut to Social Security benefits, or finally force the rich to pay their fair share. Who do you trust to make that choice?

Imagine if in 1943 FDR had decided that the US would stop helping Britain and instead would side with the Third Reich. That's a bit like what President Trump is now doing by cozying up to Russia as it tries to destroy Ukraine. Utterly shameful. A humiliating moment for the US.

The closeness of Édouard Vuillard's relationship to Lucy Hessel (his dealer's wife) is clear in this picture, from 1905, not least because her face appears in shadow - it's a glimpse into their lives, an intimate and informal moment immortalised for prosperity.

Since folks are talking about Tommy Teepell, just gonna note that he and (mainly) his father, GOP strategist Timmy Tepell, were a subject of an investigation I did a couple of years ago. Both have ties to Sean Feucht, who espouses Christian nationalism. religionnews.com/2024/07/08/…

Step by step, day by day, Americans experience the big social media platforms becoming Orwellian political censors. The US needs a federal government that will tax them and break them up; the democratic world needs to learn the lesson and protect itself.

This is what billionaire ownership of the media means: Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests. Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election. Larry Ellison’s TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk. Fight back. Defeat oligarchy. Preserve democracy.

Winter is coming. In a hard freeze, your local wild birds can still find food. What they can't find is water that isn't frozen - and that can mean the difference between making it through winter, or not. When temperatures drop, the puddles, creeks and birdbaths birds rely on lock up. Birds can eat snow, but melting it inside their bodies burns energy they can't spare in the cold. They still need to drink, and they need clean feathers to stay warm. A birdbath heater fixes it, and now's the time to set one up, before you're chipping ice out of a frozen basin. Get a heated bath with a thermostat or a drop-in de-icer, and plug it into a GFCI outlet. Never add antifreeze, glycerin or salt to keep the water open. Antifreeze is poison, and glycerin mats feathers so they can't hold heat. One catch: on the coldest days, birds will soak themselves in a heated bath and fly off with their feathers freezing. People have found cardinals too iced up to fly. When it's bitterly cold, lay a few sticks or a grate across the top so birds can drink but can't bathe. Keep it clean, and keep it full.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.
