With Toronto’s Mayoral race gearing up, here is a reminder of what we believe pro-housing candidates should champion!
We will also be refreshing our platform and reviewing + rating candidate platforms. Stay tuned.

Hot take: Everybody hates the current state of frontend web development. Some people are lying to themselves. Some people haven't realized it yet. But everybody can feel that this shit is bad, and we just haven't collectively decided to talk about it yet.
Just saw this surprisingly excellent 1975 short-film on writing good programs. Despite all the advances in computer language design, critical reading (and writing) skills remain mostly the same!

The biggest change of viewpoint I ever went through in psych training was when I said “but what if they’re doing it for attention” and my supervisor was like “what’s wrong with needing attention?” and I realised I didn’t have an answer.
Dance Diffusion explicitly doesn't use copyrighted material to "honour the intellectual property of artists". Should we not afford the same respect to visual artists, even if they are less litigious?
Source: wandb.ai/wandb_gen/audio/rep…

ALT Screenshot of text: "Dance Diffusion is also built on datasets composed entirely of copyright-free and voluntarily provided music and audio samples. Because diffusion models are prone to memorization and overfitting, releasing a model trained on copyrighted data could potentially result in legal issues. In honoring the intellectual property of artists while also complying to the best of their ability with the often strict copyright standards of the music industry, keeping any kind of copyrighted material out of training data was a must."

Imagine McDonald's makes its own money, let's call them clown-bucks, keeps most of it, and sells some to the market.
McDonald's then uses their remaining clown-bucks as collateral for actual loans.
And then people remember clown-bucks aren't real.
Twitter rewards bold statements, and discourages nuance… the actual article here has some salient points, but the tweet focusses on the controversy
"Elon Musk is administering shock therapy to a company that's had one of the most lethargic pace settings in the industry for years on end. No wonder we're seeing fireworks when you combine such different extremes on the urgency scale." world.hey.com/dhh/setting-th…
Obviously working on a product for over two years isn’t effective, but there’s a false dichotomy here that what Elon is doing is better

You can try to rationalize it all you want, but to me, the Canadian housing market looks utterly unhinged.
(data updated for Q1 2022)
As someone who spent a good part of 2021 on this, I wanted to highlight that the coordination and innovation between companies here is amazing! This is a huge win for entrepreneurs (and for a faster internet) 📈
Today, HTTP 103 Early Hints ships with Chrome 103!
Why is this important for #webperf? How did @Shopify help make all merchant sites faster? (LCP over 500ms faster at p50!) 🧵
Hint: A little collaboration w/ @cloudflare & @googlechrome
Also shoutout to the excellent @ShopifyEng engineering culture that let us iterate quickly and safely along with our partners.
I’m thrilled that the solution we shipped helps the broader internet get better!

I’m gonna dox myself here but I’m getting ready to go public soon anyway, so I wanna make an appreciation thread about the place I’ve called home for the last two years. Here’s a picture of it today, and here’s what it looked like 6 years ago. 🧵

"Some people are simplifiers. You're a complexifier."
This was a piece of feedback I received once from a colleague.
Yeah, it burned.
It felt like a shitty thing to say.

I see so many tweets about agile, epics, scrums, story points, etc. and none of it matters. We didn’t use any of that to ship the best products years ago at Apple.

2. Uber has always said it would reach profitability at scale, thanks to network effects, etc.
But Uber is the definition of scale and consistent/reliable profits are still nowhere in sight.

Here's a fun game. It's called Karl Marx or the Bible. It's simple. There's a few quotes and you have to figure out if they come from Marx or the Bible. 🧵
