Rajiv Gandhi surrendered before the US and allowed Warren Anderson, the prime accused in the Bhopal gas tragedy, to leave India.
Decades later, his son Rahul Gandhi seems to be repeating the same script, once again surrendering before the US.
Different generation. Same surrender.

Anojan called us himself and said he had injuries in six places on his head," Mr. Rajeevkanth said Wednesday. "He was crying as he told us that he had been attacked with a sharp weapon."
In Parliament, Mr. Rasamanickam said the family had been told that Mr. Anojan was struck on the head with a knife and that his life had been in danger. According to the family, he said, Mr. Anojan had been moved from the prison where he was previously held to another prison, where he was attacked by a prisoner in the section for inmates under sentence of death.
Sivarasa Anojan, the Sri Lankan migrant worker facing execution in Saudi Arabia, told his family that he had been attacked with a sharp weapon in prison, according to a civil society activist working closely with his relatives. Sri Lanka's government, relying on information from Saudi prison authorities, told Parliament on Wednesday that his injuries had been caused by another inmate's fingernails.

🚨Elon Musk vs India’s Satellite Internet Market: Musk Targets Ambani
Elon Musk has publicly accused unnamed “oligarchs” of blocking Starlink’s entry into India in order to protect what he described as a “monopolistic chokehold” over consumers. Musk did not name Mukesh Ambani or Reliance Jio, but the backdrop makes the reference difficult to ignore: Reliance is preparing its own major push into low-Earth-orbit satellite connectivity, putting it directly in competition with Starlink.
This is not a new rivalry.
The Musk-Ambani confrontation over India’s satellite-internet market has been building for years. In 2023, Reuters reported that Reliance had pushed for satellite spectrum to be auctioned, while Starlink argued that spectrum should be administratively assigned. The disagreement was fundamentally about the rules under which foreign satellite companies would compete with Indian telecom operators.
Musk eventually won an important part of that policy battle when India moved toward administrative allocation of satellite spectrum rather than auctions. At the time, Reuters described the decision as potentially setting the stage for a price battle between Musk and Ambani.
But the competition has since become much bigger.
Reliance is no longer merely defending its telecom business. It is preparing for the satellite era itself. Jio is reportedly planning a constellation of roughly 1,600–1,650 low-Earth-orbit satellites, potentially providing broadband and direct-to-device connectivity.
Starlink, meanwhile, is pushing deeper into the Indian market. Its first-generation constellation received IN-SPACe approval in 2025, while the company has subsequently reapplied for approval for a much larger Gen 2 constellation with newer capabilities.
India is already one of the world's largest digital markets, but satellite connectivity could open another frontier by reaching remote villages, difficult terrain, ships, aircraft and locations where conventional fibre and mobile infrastructure remain expensive or impractical.
That makes India too important for Musk to ignore, and too strategically important for Indian telecom giants to surrender without a fight. However, looking at current prices of Starlink, the cost of Starlink is way too costlier for Indian market.
The irony is that Musk's latest accusation comes precisely as India is trying to construct the regulatory framework for this emerging industry. Starlink, Jio and other players still require spectrum allocation and various security and regulatory clearances before commercial satellite services can fully begin.
So the real battle is no longer simply Musk versus Ambani.
It is a battle over who gets to shape India's satellite-connectivity ecosystem, and under what rules.
He may not have named Ambani.
But in India's satellite-internet race, the two billionaires are already moving toward the same battlefield.
