The answer seems pretty clear: he needed to separate a fragment of the ring to create an independent Sentry/decoy that could operate away from him. If the fragment remained connected to the ring, the construct likely wouldn’t have been able to travel far from Hal.

Okay... I genuinely didn't expect Lanterns to go there this early.
The premiere starts like a grounded Green Lantern mystery, with Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre)
The grounded atmosphere, mystery, character chemistry and slow-burn approach make this feel very different from a typical superhero show.
The episode is currently getting strong reactions online, with viewers praising the writing and the chemistry between Chandler and Pierre.
If this is the kind of storytelling DC is bringing to its new universe, I'm definitely watching the next episode.
