The broad flank heaves; the nostrils blow A cloudy vapour on the air; The horned forehead lowers low Beneath the curls of matted hair; Against the turf the black hoof tears, Unearthing sod and shattered clay, While grim the crimson eyeball glares Upon the intruder in the way. A start—a lurch—the heavy massIgnites to thunder, swift and blind; The iron sinews shake the grass, The flying turf is flung behind!
