I actually thought Piss Boy from UT was the worst thing I’d see yesterday. That a-hole who plays for the Trojans proved me wrong.

Rest easy, brother.
Cliff Burton: The Musician Who Made Metallica Matter Cliff Burton walked into Metallica in December 1982 after James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich saw him playing with Trauma in Los Angeles. The guy was only 24 when he died four years later, but those four years changed everything. He played on their first three albums—Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets—and Master of Puppets is still considered one of the best metal albums of all time. That's not accident. That's Cliff. What made him different was his musical background. He was the oldest member and the one with formal musical education, so Hetfield and Ulrich leaned on him to make decisions. He brought harmonies and melodies that Hetfield and Ulrich had never played before, and eventually they opened up to his ideas about composition and structure. Thrash metal didn't have to sound like a hammer hitting nails. Cliff proved it could be intelligent, layered, and still destroy. On September 27, 1986, Metallica's tour bus crashed in Sweden and Burton was thrown from the window, the bus falling on top of him. He was gone at 24, but his fingerprints are all over Metallica's DNA. Every harmonic guitar part, every dynamic shift, every moment where the band played something intricate instead of just fast—that's Cliff's ghost still teaching them how to write. Four years changed metal forever. Source: Metal databases, Metallica official archives, and producer Flemming Rasmussen interviews. Photo by Pete Cronin/Redferns
