An unexpected storm swept through Gaza today, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds. It is only mid October, and already displaced families are facing the devastating reality of another winter without adequate shelter. For the next several months, thousands of families will be forced to endure freezing temperatures, relentless rain, and flooding in dilapidated tents that can barely withstand a passing shower. Tents that have been patched together again and again, their fabric torn, their foundations weakened, offering little protection from the elements. We cannot wait for catastrophe to strike before we act. Preparation is survival. The Sameer Project is working to winterize displacement camps across Gaza. We need to purchase new tents for families whose shelters are beyond repair, reinforce existing tents, and fortify vulnerable areas with sandbags to redirect floodwaters before they destroy what little families have left. Every flooded tent means children sleeping in freezing, soaked bedding. Every collapsed shelter means another family left exposed to the elements. Winterization cannot wait until winter.
