The problem is LA be hollering West Coast which is an inclusion of everybody & The Bay wants a stamp of it’s own, they’ve always considered themselves as their own cultural universe NoCal & SoCal identity splits that amplified through regional music, slang, street politics & competition. LA has had more mainstream institutional influence on HipHop, while the Bay has had an enormous amount of innovation & underground & cultural influence but wants the LA spotlight & recognition If anything The Bay resents LA because they don’t feel like they get enough credit Outsiders think The Bay is basically an extension of LA but in reality each region has very different style & cultural identities, so when outsiders put them under the umbrella of LA/WestCoast I guess to them it feels like an erasure of their own cultural history. LAs influence is Ice T, NWA, Dre, Snoop, Death Row Tupac, GFunk, Gangsta Rap, Kendrick, Mustard, Problem, Latin HipHop, Jerkin, Ratchet, Hollywood & Industries, more national recognition Bays influence is Too Short, MC Hammer, Digital Underground, Tupac (yes he’s on both sides), E40, Mac Dre, The Coup, Blackalicious, Mobb music, Hyphy, Sideshows, dance, funk, pimp rap, their own slang, cadence & production, independent, more regional Hell I would honestly say The Bay had a stronger HipHop culture before the genre was birthed a name & has influenced LA more than people acknowledge sometimes. They’ve had more unique ideas & regional movements than people realize, yet LA has more influence on the mainstream It all comes down to The Bay wanting its own recognition without the guise of LA culture 🤷🏾‍♀️
