Great turnout at our South Australia Crop Technology Centre field day today. Morning sessions provided some great insights into the canola and bean trials. Thanks to guest speakers Dr Angela van de Wouw of @UniMelb and James Manson from @UniofAdelaide for joining us to share their expertise. @Pooley_Nick_FAR @darcydww2 @Daniel_in_Ag @AaronVague @Blooming_fields @GRDCSouth @theGRDC @MacKillopGroup

Is it worth windrowing faba beans? Possibly.
Much easier to pick timing compared with canola and the crop can be surprisingly green when ready.

Once all seeds have black line at hilum faba beans are ready to windrow. This sample a few days off. #easytopick

New Group 1 powerful chemistry coming to control FOP/DIM resistant grasses. It should be similarly very effective on ARG. 👍 @SyngentaANZ

Very happy with the JD S series upgrade kit on our #SeedTerminator. Nicer to use, & aside from when tryed to harvest a patch of Whip Thistle in Lentils at full speed 🙄, no belt slippage at all so far. Great job #SeedTerminator 👍

Canola on right after fabas and on left after wheat - crop on right coming home with wind in the sails on extra water and N. Effects on yield, costs, inputs, profit, weeds, disease, all important to track over the years in the @GRDC @NSWDPI @CSIRO Farming Systems Project

Great webinar line up tomorrow. Hear from growers using weed seed impact mills in high rainfall areas, plus an update on mill technology.
Register to receive the recording even if you can’t make it.
TOMORROW ⏰
Join us for a discussion on getting the most out of weed seed impact mills in high rainfall regions.
Hear from HRZ growers who are using impact mills, @KondininGroup's Ben White (@1800weevil) and reps from each of the mill companies.

Note the permit for procymidone on #fababeans. Max 2 applications in a crop, WHP now 21 days
The @APVMA has issued 5 minor use permits relevant to grain growers helping to make crop protection products available in situations where there is insufficient market size or economic return to attract product registrations.

Interesting Sunday read re 1983 dust storm. Yes, farming impacts the natural environment, as does urban consumption & activity. ‘No-till’ method of cropping has led to huge gains in soil health. Herbicides are an imperfect but essential part of this system theage.com.au/national/victo…

Disease in beans? Think of 2023 sowing and what you will sow. Grain quality will affect disease carry over and plant vigour.
Look at buying new seed from cleaner paddocks or use last years seed. Some pics of diseased seed from a 2020 @VicGovAg @theGRDC @SouthernFS trial.

Picture tells a thousand words...
1. Power of improved genetic disease resistance
2. Incorporation of SDHI into conventional fungicide Chlorothalonil/Carbendazim program = superior control with less shots in more resistant material

Interesting observation at the @csiro long term systems trial where after another 105 mm in last week the monoculture fabas (left) have gone over with high disease and intercrop Faba/canola (right) down too but off ground and less disease. Harvest going to be interesting

I thought a few yrs back that the EDDHA Fe used in vit/hort would work on beans in our calcareous clays. Solid response this yr @ Lake Hawdon, used as a seed coat & banded at sowing + 2x EDTA Fe foliar. It’s expensive, but the ⬆️ yld might make it pay 🤷🏼♀️ @MacKillopGroup @SoilCRC
