Man, we need more artistic depictions of LOTR again. It'll be hard to not think of the live action depictions but it'd be nice to have artists reading the books and using their own imaginations again.

We're starting this in my philosophical book club this November! It's supposed to be pretty good I hear 😉

My class had a quiz today so I let them go a little early. This gave me some extra time too, not enough to work on any 1 of my 6 jobs--thankfully!--but just enough to read Gene Wolfe recount how the Book of The New Sun came about. He was such a clever and brilliant man. I'm excited and terrified to bring my philosophical book club through the series in 2027 after we finish The Lord of The Rings.

LOL! I've been reading every Doctor Strange comic for a project I'm working on, starting at the beginning with Strange Tales in 1963 and working my way up through the present. While re-reading the Triumph and Torment graphic novel I realized that Agamotto, one of the three Vishanti that gives mystical powers to adepts like Strange, often appears as a tiger… Strange wears a mystical amulet called “The Eye of Agamotto” and very, very often it strengthens him and gets him out of deadly binds… Which means that Doctor Strange gets his power from THE EYE OF THE TIGER haha! I hope Steve Ditko and Stan Lee snuck that in on purpose but either way it's hilarious.

I get a lot out of @trendsettercase's work on Substack and YouTube. His channel, ParkNotes, is a regular source of wisdom and practical advice for reading better and organizing your thoughts. It's very cool to have him behind my new book, Great Escape. Pre-orders up now.

Expertise doesn't carry over accross disciplines. Just because you're an expert in one field doesn't mean you're qualified to spout off on or in another field. I think it's time we addressed the elephant in the room: Doctor Strange earned a medical doctorate. He only has his Master's in the Mystical Arts. He has medically retired from his medical practice--there's this whole thing with his hands, long story--yet he still goes by 'doctor' and not 'master', though he solely practices the Mystical arts now... Yes it's misleading and yes I think it's intentional.

Does any have a source for this picture? I'm really hoping it's not AI. I think I remember it from pre-slop days but can't be sure. I know one of you knows!

Spending the morning with Aristotle. I prefer Aristocles but this is a close second. PhD life is pretty cool so far. Can't wait to continue sharing what I learn 🤝

I lead a philosophical book club and write companion essays for each book we read. We're reading The Lord of the Rings later this year, plus Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, The View From Nowhere by Thomas Nagel, and Pascal's Pensées! Come join us at Parker's Ponderings.

"We talk about being able “to control ourselves,” but self-control is a rare and remarkable virtue. We may think we have ourselves under control; yet a friend can easily tell us things about ourselves of which we have no knowledge." -Carl Jung, “Approaching the Unconscious” in Man and His Symbols, 7.

Cool memory 4 years back. If you'd like to watch the episode and hear our conversation, here's the link youtu.be/0taNsi5CLKo Parker and I will likely cross paths sometime up here in Milwaukee since he's now a doctoral student at Marquette and I'm teaching for them this fall

Spiderman: Brand New Day is the best movie I've seen in so long. A beautiful movie, even if emotionally exhausting. A very New York movie, which was refreshing. I like Zendaya now. Her most endearing performance ever. Tom Holland solidified himself as Spiderman. This is the best Spiderman movie. Incredible. And they've finally let go of the old Ironman days.

I really hope my publishers let me keep this potentially pseudographical epigraph from Thales. It's integral to my chapter!

Well to be honest, I wasn't in the market for a new car but I saw how someone took the time to open all the hoods and I was just compelled.

Remember: Agamemnon is the distant grandfather of Paul Atreides. So technically, DUNE is a sequel to THE ODYSSEY. You won’t fully understand DUNE without understanding this point.
