The proposal can look right and the relationship can still be wrong. A supplier delivers a brief you already own. A partner helps make the decisions and owns what happens next. Both can be right. Confusing them is expensive. Which one does your business need?
1
“Exactly like Notion, but simpler” is not yet a product brief. Simpler does not mean hiding half the buttons. It means choosing one user, one job and the features you will delete. If nobody can name the first feature to remove, the brief is not simple yet. It is vague.
1
“Can we just add one field?” Who enters it? What happens to old records? Which reports and automations use it? The box on the screen is the small part. Before saying yes, work out what else changes and what moves off the plan.

What would your company still refuse to compromise in 2046? Basecamp has spent over two decades defending independence, small teams and less complexity. A slogan can change in an afternoon. Conviction is expensive to imitate.
How many meetings exist just to keep your systems moving? Vercel made deployment feel almost invisible: push a change, get a preview, merge it, go live. That is the standard. Good technology removes the work around the work.
How much of your tech budget is going on a postcode? Our engineers are in Moldova: full European overlap, senior people and London-tested leadership without London overhead. Pay for judgement and ownership. A postcode is not a quality certificate.

We have turned down businesses that were ready to sign. Not because of budget. They wanted a supplier to follow a brief and leave. We are built to question the brief, own the decisions and stay after launch. A bad-fit yes costs more than an honest no.

Can your product explain itself when nobody from your team is there to help? Stripe treats documentation as part of the product: clear, useful and built around the person doing the work. Documentation is where the brand has to work without you.
The most expensive tech mistake often happens before the first line of code. The hire, platform or build is chosen before anyone maps the real problem. By the time the missing questions surface, money is attached to the answer. Understand first. Then decide.
“We’ll fix that later” sounds free. It is usually a monthly bill hiding in workarounds, delays, fragile integrations and knowledge held by one person. Price the backlog by time, revenue and risk. Then fix the items charging the most interest.
1
You planned the new system. What keeps the business running until it is ready? A proper technology roadmap needs two tracks: build what comes next, and protect today's operation until cutover. Change only works when the business keeps working through it.
1
You got the code. But did you get an owner? A handover can transfer files. It cannot transfer context or accountability. Who owns the next technical decision six months after launch?
2
The expensive tech hiring mistake can happen before the interview: choosing a role before defining the outcome. Start with what must improve, which decisions need an owner, and what kind of ownership the gap needs. What must this person make better?
4
If your key tech person left tomorrow, what would actually break? If the honest answer is “we’re not sure”, critical knowledge does not belong to the business. It lives in one person’s head. Value key people. Do not make continuity depend on their memory.

Ryanair has done what many brands are too nervous to try: made the trade-off obvious. Low fares and route choice, without pretending to be premium. A strong brand is not universally liked. It is consistently understood.

“It’s just a small change.” The visible edit may take an hour. Understanding what it touches is the real work. Good technical teams make the hidden consequences visible before a small request becomes an expensive surprise.
1
Launch day gets too much credit. The build is only the beginning. Monitoring, security, incidents, performance and improvement decide whether software keeps earning its place. The team that builds it should stay to run it.
2
If three restaurant sites depend on sticky notes, WhatsApp and one person’s memory, do not begin with a giant rebuild. Map the risky hand-offs, keep the tools that work, and fix the knowledge bottlenecks first. The goal is resilience, not a shinier diagram.
4
Please do not hire us if you only need extra developers or a one-off build. Treebs replaces the technology function you have not hired: technical leadership, senior engineering, product thinking and long-term ownership in one team.

Most sales calls start with a supplier explaining what they can do. Ours starts with us saying as little as possible and listening as much as possible. The less we assume at the start, the less you pay to correct later.
