ALT We opened the fund when the pandemic began in March 2020. It was only ever intended to be temporary, but the need remained so we kept it going. In that time we have distributed over £54400 to trans people. Sadly, the time has come to close the trans relief fund.
ALT The fund has always run from donations from trans people and allies in Glasgow. During early lockdown some people had greater levels of disposable income than before and the mood of the era made crowdfunding via social media simple. This is no longer the case and people have had to wait longer and longer to receive support.
ALT It would be possible to raise funds differently but the current team is no longer able to keep up the work of operating the fund, much less developing sustainable new ways of fundraising and then recruiting and training an entirely new team.
ALT Over the course of the fund’s existence 10 people have been part of the team, usually just 1-3 at a time. All of us are part of the trans community here in Glasgow. Anyone could have done what we did and anyone could do it again. We would love to see similar ideas and projects spring up after this one closes.
ALT There are many things we would have done differently. If anyone does want to start a similar fund we would love to speak with you and help you avoid our mistakes.
