Constraining an advantage/disadvantage I put this in my reading list yesterday but you can just take the drills from transforming basketball, bc it’s an invasion sport, and apply it to football. They share so much free information
💡 6-on-5 vs Zone 👉 Six offense versus five on defense. Offense can only score at the rim or 3PT. 🏀 Great game for playing in tight spaces and learning how to play in the windows of the defense.

The perfect time to emphasise a “clap back” is when the scorer has fallen over This gives a huge numbers advantage to be exploited

Appreciate @transformbball for highlighting @MizzouHoops!
Missouri Tigers Men’s basketball led the country in transition points per game in 2024-25. Two out of the last four years they’ve finished top 10 in transition offense nationally. This isn’t luck. It’s a system — built on principles that every coach can implement regardless of level. Here are the transition offense principles that Assistant Coach, @mcline_20 Cline and the Missouri coaching staff have built their programme around.

Since the game is unpredictable and chaotic, transition periods are frequently occurring and are where the most opportunities arise, as the defense is at its most vulnerable. The best teams and athletes prioritize these moments and train the many ways they can efficiently score out of them. In this game, players have zero dribbles to throw a gold medal touchdown.

Task simplification. See how Liam constrains the defense to ensure the challenge level is just right for the offense. This is especially important for youth coaches working with younger players new to basketball. You should still go 100% CLA vs drills, but ensuring the defense are constrained.

The player development pyramid is a perfect tool for structuring rotations, clarifying roles, and balancing development with winning. Save this to try in your next game.

See how to introduce the "pull behind" through 2-on-1 shooting. Only pass to corner player, and force a hot closeout only going baseline. The offense then makes a decision to finish at the rim OR pass to the fill behind based on who is more open.

👉Too many defenders wait for the screen to hit them. But the best ones? They cancel it before it even happens. ⛹️‍♂️This small-sided game isn’t just about defending the pick and roll, it’s about training defenders to disrupt it with purpose. To fight over, pressure the ball, and deny any advantage forming. 🧠You’ll also start to see better screeners emerge, because intention sharpens on both sides of the ball when every rep has something real on the line.

Instructions: 1. 2 offensive players go around the chairs and their defenders follow. 1 MIG defender inside the smile.  2. Coach will pass to either offensive player and it is live. 3. Offense is trying to score a gold medal. Benefit of this game: teaches players to make quick decisions under intense, defensive pressure. Will also help the players learn to make passes in tight spaces.

💡 4-on-4 Swing to PNR 👉 Swing the ball side to side. Anytime, the coach yells live. The handler must initiate a pick and roll for the best spacing they’re in. 🏀 Promotes recognition of known spacings and coverage solutions.

Great intention to work on playing off 2 feet, but here’s why a 🏀 drill like this completely fails to transfer like coaches think it does. Turnovers happen in a game because players are not perceiving variables such as where the defense are located…(cont) 🧵 A THREAD
JUMP STOPS AND SHOT FAKES You have to rep it, but at the high school and college level it’s a game changer Less turnovers + more free throws = Good Chance of Winning (Via @imjohnbrennan 🎥)

Basketball is a contact sport, so we need to train with contact if we want to acquire the skills needed to handle overly aggressive, pressuring defenders. Placing athletes in rougher play will give them time to figure out how to  - Engage and manage arm battles - Create contact in order to create separation - Manipulate and take advantage of another’s momentum and force applied to you and take it in directions that can toss them or pull them to get your advantage

Instructions: 1. Offensive player has 3 dribbles to get a gold medal.  2. Defense are playing 'octopus defense' where they cant move their feet, they can only use their arms.  Benefit of this game: Players explore different ways to get around the first defender and finish while avoiding their shot from being blocked. Coaches can change constraints and allow the offense to start from different spots while the nail defender can play live D outside the paint.

The problem with many shooting drills are evident in how coaches make the decision for players as to what shot they will take and where they will shoot from. Every shot is predetermined. Shooting in the game is the complete opposite to this.

🤔We've all done suicides. Run to one line, back to the baseline, to the next line, and back again. 👉Sure, it gets your heart rate up... but there is a better way to do conditioning that is more representative of the game.

Why are so many Europeans taking over the NBA? The reason may lie in the European development model versus AAU. In Europe, players grow up in club systems, often joining at under 12 and staying with the same development environment all the way through under 18. This allows for players to play up different age groups, as well as having more consistent principles of play based on teamwork and finding good shots, as opposed to individualistic basketball, which is often seen in AAU. When we watch European players play in the NBA, there’s often a common theme. Players know how to move the ball and work together to create an advantage. With more and more European players entering the NBA, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next👀.

Looking for a great re-spacing 1-on-1 start? The activity starts as soon as the defense move to touch the ball. The offense must get out to space and play the 1-on-1 from the deep corner. Lots of options to add constraints here!
