KD Pivot Mastery When defenders are this close, they are at a severe disadvantage because they have less space/time to perceive if the motion Ball movement (many players don’t move the ball enough and don’t rotate shoulder/trunk enough), step width, & rotation of head-shoulders with enough “pace” overloads the defender read (thinks it’s a real threat to his right) @KDTrey5

Engaging defenders when a shot goes up (boxing out) is kind of important. While knowing the shot went up, tracing the ball and obtaining space where caroms will be. If he just goes toward rim, he will soon find himself under the rim and less likely to obtain the rebound as clean “Amount of engagement” with a defender, reach of player & jump “quickness” all can play a role in how certain “types” of players may be coached to rebound @trainwjc

James gallops, delays & here we see rapid “contract-relax” of the lower body into a cross. “Foot replace & go opposite” can be executed with cross, BTL, or BTB ball manipulation side to side Notice it’s based on his VISION. In particular what his peripheral vision is “picking up” @trainwjc

Austin use to cook defenders with a gallop & cross. Eye gaze, ball width, chest rotation, screen engagement potential, & his rate of foot contacts/quickness ALL interplay to deceive the defenders perception Despite defenders “knowing” it might be a solution he will resort to, the criteria met would overload their “perception to action” @trainwjc @AustinRivers25

Entering the ball to the post was intentional so @ScottiePippen scans how the defender is guarding it while pivoting & taking information in about MJ’s off ball movement. If he didn’t have to dribble, he wouldn’t. Not only is this an energy efficient mechanism, it’s also more deceptive than just immediately putting the ball down. MJ’s defender (Nick Anderson) & defenders overall were often conditioned for the flash to top or pass back to the top which Scottie & MJ adapt for in real time Could he easily have passed to Bill at the top who isn’t a 3 pt threat and run a DHO? Sure. Does it have to be the primary source of creating space & time “all the time” or can “off ball” deceptive movement & “pivot patience-scanning-intentional passing” be of major value also..? @trainwjc

What kind of basketball is this? 5 Passes. 3 Dribbles. Timely off ball movement of varying acceleration rates by all players. Players catching with patience allowing their visual system to actually perceive information prior to dribbling the ball. When Horace catches on the R wing, could he “hunt a DHO” with a guard? Sure. Does he have to do it “all the time” as many 4’s/5’s do now? No Could offenses apply a simple tactical method of “Catch to see, perceive & pass”, & then alter into “dribble drive” offenses/DHO dominant? Sure. It’s much more deceptive, pleasurable to a viewers eye, & can stymie a defenses’ capacity to anticipate/be conditioned on what to expect. .5 decisions, spacing 5 out, & going 1V1 after hunting a switch while the rest of the team stands still or a random basket/backdoor cut occurs, isn’t high IQ basketball, & it’s actually easier to defend especially when their is no off ball movement that “occupies” help defenders (well intentioned passing is result of timely off ball movement purpose & intention). .5 is also a reductionist approach in that, “player A, you don’t have individual adaptive skill/vision/IQ & we aren’t going to develop it” so just make a really fast decision and reduce how much time you even have to perceive information, but let’s hope of the best. @TommyTempesta @trainwjc

Why was this move successful in creating space & time for the shot attempt? *Why a “move” or the expression of movement may or may not work is highly dependent on the defensive players “information filter”. @TommyTempesta @trainwjc

Cooper Flagg’s Feet: Rotational force or torque is a variable that occurs when players accelerate past defenders in a “Curvlinear” fashion. It’s under pressure in various circumstances on court, however we are highlighting this particular movement expression. The sub-talar joint acts to help convert torque & in return allows for elastic energy return as well as “balance” being maintained throughout. Big toe extension, plantar flexion, inversion-eversion, ankle dorsiflexion & the blend of tissue capacity in such ranges of motion are all on full display. @TommyTempesta

What really got him? Let’s dive in: Sengun approaches with an Upright posture towards the defender which disguises intention to ATTACK and allows him to gain CLOSENESS to the defender. He does this while manipulating the dribble from right to left with a long reception time with his hand starting on top of the ball then it goes behind the ball in a NARROW TO WIDE crossover with BALL WIDTH timed with the left foot plant to send a signal to the defense that he might drive left. Then he drops his posture, bops the defender, trail legs back to the right and finishes the lay.
What variable or variables made the defender shift as much as he did to his right which enhances the effectiveness of this crossover?

How do you respond to a miss in REAL TIME? OG misses the first shot directionally. In the same possession, he gets another opportunity and knocks it down. This is what CALIBRATION is really about. The first miss gives him information: How far did the ball travel? Where did it go relative to the target? What type of miss was it? Because we’ve coached OG remotely to explore back-rim targeting protocols extensively, he has developed IKP (intrinsic knowledge of performance) which is the sensory feedback and internal understanding of how that shot felt and was organized. The result of the miss gives him additional information about direction, distance and the target. He doesn’t need someone to stop the game and “fix” his form. He can use that information, reorganize the next action and get the ball back to the target while the LIVE GAME is still happening. That is Calibration.

Your appreciation keeps me going. Thank you for your candor. The worlds needs more of this. All we care about at BB, is visual evidence & the truth. That truth has inherently helped many coaches & players assess more potently, create hope & belief, & feel the difference both on & off the court.

MJ max height release point close range jump shots on his way to 63 points. An NBA playoff record that still stands. His goal was to win & do whatever it took to win. Jump height is a trainable quality, max height release points are a trainable quality, fading without as much jump height is a trainable quality, bias arms swings left or right are trainable qualities, & the perception to action cycle of when it’s the solution (based on primary defender, congestion at rim, passing or non passing options) IS A TRAINABLE QUALITY. Those forcing rim or 3 only lack the depth, lens & intuitive method application that can easily enhance shot making adaptability no matter the level it’s scored at. A rim finish in major traffic with less space and time, or a rushed-forced pass that wasn’t visually scanned with “enough” time to be deceptive and or create a true “space-time” advantage for the receiver (because of enforcing .5 decisions or lack of coaching methods to explore specific limiting factors to address said adaptability), is a flawed framework of statistical analysis seething with reductionism. A square peg will never fit into a round hole. Space and time to “perception to action” are the principles that drive highly adaptable basketball players to increase probability of success. It is on us as coaches to coach the limiting factors that actually augment skilled movement adaptation. BUT if we don’t know what to look for or what it “actually” is, herein in lies “rim and 3 only” & .5 or less decisions & 5 out 1V1 to limit defender help coaching conjecture. But now that everyone is doing it, why do we have non adaptable players handling, attacking, turning it over, rushing passes, terrible shots “at the rim” etc etc Why? Because we are not putting them through strategic failure to induce specific adaptive responses that enable better vision, movement, decision making via perception to action, shot making capacity at all levels to create highly adaptable PLAYERS. This will then allow in game coaching strategies to be DIVERSIFIED! (Instead of reductionist driven)
