The hit-run driver accused of ramming into an NYPD cop over the weekend is an illegal alien who was arrested for assault last month — and then released despite an ICE detainer.
Eduardo Paulino, 31, of the Dominican Republic was already wanted by ICE when he allegedly plowed into the cop responding to a rowdy Saturday night gathering in the South Bronx, according to law-enforcement sources.
Paulino, who entered the US in 2023, had a detainer lodged against him for final removal from the country after his crime a month earlier.
In that incident Sept. 14, he was accused of pummeling a stranger in a spat over parking, repeatedly punching the man, 29, in the face on East 139th Street near Willis Avenue in The Bronx.
But the charges Paulino faced – misdemeanor assault and harassment — were not bail-eligible under the state’s lax bail-reform laws, and he was released on his own recognizance, according to sources and the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
The man Paulino allegedly punched – who was left with a bloody nose, bloody cuts on his mouth and scratches on his leg – was arrested as well for his role in the violent argument and faced the same charges, prosecutors said.
But even though Paulino was sought by ICE for detainment, he was allowed to walk free.
Paulino – who now faces a top charge of attempted murder – was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond during his Monday arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court.
The immigration detainer is still in effect, online city Department of Correction records show.

Again, if you read this mishmash of randomly assembled stats, you will come away thinking without *quite* being told outright that the risk of subway murder is lower than it has been. This is just not the case and it is a disservice for readers, who deserve to know the reality, not the stubborn ideology or incompetence (it's one or the other!). Since 2020, you have been consistently, persistently at far higher risk of being a victim of serious felony violence in the subways, period. You can parse the violent-crime categories for yourself. You can debate the how, why, who, and *absolute* risk, but you cannot debate that the subways are and have been far more violent than they were seven years ago. This narrative only works on the NYT and one holdout truther transit bro. NYT and our truther bro still swallow the NYPD line at face value. Every other outlet and transit advocate can and does now parse the subcategory facts for themselves. There is no dispute that serious and deadly violence -- the idea behind "safe" or "safer" or "not safe" -- in transit is higher consistently since before 2020.

Investigators have released surveillance photos of the suspect in a red tracksuit and a full black face mask, confirming this devastating confrontation spilled from the platform onto an E train before the fatal shot was fired.
Darrel’s fraternal twin brother, a Marine serving our country, shared that this loss has left a permanent "black hole" in their family's heart. No one should ever have to say goodbye to a loved one like this.

Felony assaults in the transit systems have doubled under Letitia James (up 94%). And according to the police commissioner, half of such felony assaults (48%) are perpetrated by mentally ill individuals.
Letitia James called this “progress” at our debate. I call it failure.
