So there’s a lot of discussion on here already about Rob Dillingham and small guards not working anymore in the NBA. I don’t want to dismiss guards of a certain stature just not being equipped to handle today’s NBA standards. There’s a lesson to be learned, that many have been vocal about, regarding players of a certain height/weight combo having seemingly insurmountable mountains to climb to justify being taken in the first round, let alone the lottery. Where I think Dillingham’s greatest deficiency in relation to making his archetype at least serviceable in a backup capacity is his inability to break defenses as a passer. When I watched Rob at Kentucky, I just didn’t see the guy who was going to kill opposing teams with his ability to make those around him better as a passer. Dynamic handle, slithery, OTD shot maker. But this league is too good nowadays to bend, let alone break, to a guard who doesn’t have the strength advantage to finish through contact, isn’t an elite passer, and is relying solely on jump shooting to try and outweigh expected negative defensive impact. I’m not saying Rob being an elite passer would turn him into a superstar. But it would be giving him a chance to hold onto a rotation spot instead of being one step out of the NBA. You HAVE to make others around you better in the NBA no matter what position or role you’re in. Period.
