We spent 4 years as team @enhtqi and I can honestly say I learned more about systems, improvement, leadership and what really matters in those 4 years than I did in any other role in 25 years in the NHS. It’s so long from us and me for now as I explore new beginnings ❤️

I read heartbreaking tweets like this repost @cull_anna and articles about the experience of NHS staff nursingtimes.net/news/nurse-…
and wonder if the system that needs fixing is right down to the interpersonal relationships between all of us. Human to human #KindnessMatters

I was supposed to start the top managers programme @TheKingsFund today. Had a bursary from Simon and his wonderful team @WalterCo and the place secured and life had other plans. #silverlinings #kindnessmatters #bestlaidplans
Definitely have a lot of experience of hearing this when people are tackling difficult issues. If you’re going to make difficult decisions and/or just tow the party line at least have the courage to own it or give somebody a plausible why!
"Managerial ventriloquism" is a common practice in the health & case sector. It's where leaders mention others (often those in higher authority) when they ask people to do things. Eg, "the Regional Office needs this by the close of play" or "the Director says we have to do this".
Over time, a culture builds where:
A) managers speak for others too frequently, undermining their own credibility &
B) responsibility keeps being passed to someone else, with no one willing to take ownership of decisions.

In praise of "worker bees" in organisations & in nature. They keep the system going. Hierarchical structures often fail to recognise the impact of small-scale contributors. We need to acknowledge that “smaller” players are critical to the health & resilience of larger organisations. (Also, in nature, bees hate micromanagers):

As leaders please genuinely ask yourselves how many of these you’re really living and not just paying lip service to. Then take action that is authentic. The little decisions you make will be the ones that drive lasting change.

Yes very simple and when not there so very apparent
Four fundamental ways to boost engagement at work. With the rise of hybrid/remote work, there’s a real risk that, unless we're far more deliberate about creating a culture of belonging, the people we lead may come to feel like “just another face on the Teams screen.” People need to feel:
1) Seen: that they make a unique contribution and that their absence would be noticed.
2) Heard: that their ideas and suggestions matter.
3) Valued: that their contributions are appreciated, especially when they make a significant effort. Research shows leaders systematically overestimate how much appreciation they’re conveying to their teams.
4) Encouraged: in the form of aiding and guiding each person's career.

We are not sure if Don said this first but whoever said it, it’s true. If you look around and the system is behaving as it always has, don’t be surprised when things don’t change.

If you are a leader in healthcare, should this not be our aim, for patients, communities and for the people working in the organisation? #patientsafety #staffwellbeing
You can google a set of tools. It is the leadership and how you make people feel that counts. Which one of these could you be working on in your own leadership journey today? #goodluckwiththat #notbeingtrasparency
