Mike Penders will have a baptism of fire at Stamford Bridge, with his first two PL games being Spurs and Manchester United.
He was brought in to be our main goalkeeper for years to come, and now he will have the chance to show what he is made of.
Promising start at Everton.
Delighted that Jorrel Hato took his opportunity well today.
He looked solid defensively, and made some very smart overlapping runs going forward, including for his assist.
The signs have been there since he was at Ajax - he will be a top player.
This victory is a massive step forward for the group.
Getting the win away at Everton with a clean sheet with a referee against us and our goalkeeper going off injured shows mental fortitude not seen for well over a year.
Our best all-round performance of the season so far.
This looks really bad for Emi Martinez.
Head-on-head contact at that speed is nasty.
Wishing him a speedy recovery.
The second half will be all about whether we can keep our heads.
This has been a bad-tempered game, not helped by poor officiating, but we cannot have a player sent off here.
Also, attacking set pieces might be crucial for scraping a goal to breach this Everton defence.
Disappointing to see Pep Chavarria injured after such a good performance against Bournemouth.
Opportunity for Jorrel Hato in that LWB position in his absence.
Today will be an important test of the mentality of this squad and whether they can build momentum.
Everton (a) is always difficult, and they are unbeaten, but we have had the week to prep and the team picks itself.
It will be a step forward if we can pick up 3 points today.
Selling Reece James isn’t a realistic option that is on the table.
There isn’t a market for a player with his injury record on his 200k+ wages.
Our best option is to enjoy him when he is fit, as he is a top player, but build a squad that doesn’t rely on his availability.
It was good to see Xabi Alonso create a clear 4-4-2 shape out of possession that improved us at the back.
This is a clear example of the impact of coaching and what time with a group of players can do.
It is no surprise that we conceded very few chances from open play.
Jordan Henderson scored his first brace today since 23 February 2014.
For context:
• Diego Costa had not even signed for Chelsea
• Xavi Alonso was still playing for Real Madrid
• Man City had only one Premier League title
• Josh Acheampong was 7 years old
This was the most complete performance of the season so far.
The team were scintillating and clinical in attack, and better defensively even with areas to improve.
Aside from the 15-minute period after they scored, it felt a more controlled display today as well.
Fantastic cross from Chavarria into João Pedro to make it 4-1.
After 15 difficult minutes when they scored, it is telling that the fourth goal came after we were able to regain control of the game.
Outstanding work from Pedro Neto to retrieve that ball, and a characteristically excellent finish from Joao Pedro.
It is a fantastic habit to score early in halves.
The best thing about that half is that we were able to exert a level of control not seen in previous games.
It helps to score two early goals, but the back two in buildup helped Colwill and the Caicedo-Hendo pivot dropped in smartly to relieve the pressure.
Very happy so far.
This lineup today could very easily be a back three or back four, which creates uncertainty for Bournemouth.
I hope the international break has allowed Alonso to build better cohesion and structure in the back line.
We cannot ship 2+ goals every game any longer.
This team is far better than I expected this afternoon.
It is great to see Palmer, João Pedro and Caicedo all back from injury and Palestra on the bench.
Hopefully nothing serious has happened to Reece James.
I hope that Enzo Maresca and Enzo Fernandez enjoy reaping what they sow at Manchester City.
Let us not forget they both wanted to join a club pending 115 charges…
Cole Palmer backing out of the England set up to manage his load is good for Chelsea.
Xabi Alonso will have a 3-week spell with Palmer, Caicedo, James, João Pedro & Palestra at Cobham with the other players not called up.
This period should help Xabi to relaunch our season.
