The inaugural East African Childrenβs Summit on Climate Change, held in Kampala, Uganda, adopted the Kampala Childrenβs East African Community Declaration on Climate, calling on EAC leaders to prioritise childrenβs needs in regional climate policies and action.
The Declaration was presented to the EAC Deputy Secretary General, @AguerAriik who represented the Secretary General, Amb. Stephen Mbundi, at the Parliament of Uganda in Kampala on 16 October 2026.
It sets out key demands to protect childrenβs education, health, safety and future.
πΉ Key resolutions in the Declaration:
β
Build climate-resilient schools and health facilities that can withstand climate-related disruptions.
β
Provide safe water and sanitation to protect childrenβs health and wellbeing.
β
Establish early-warning systems and strengthen disaster preparedness to safeguard children from climate-related risks.
β
Integrate climate education into school curricula to equip children with practical knowledge and skills.
β
Promote clean energy and restore the environment through tree planting, wetland conservation and improved waste management.
β
Establish a permanent EAC Regional Childrenβs Council to give children a structured platform to engage decision-makers and influence regional policies and programmes.
β
Strengthen inclusion and accountability by ensuring that children with disabilities and those from rural, displaced and other vulnerable communities are heard, while policymakers provide feedback on how their recommendations are addressed.
π What happens next?
The EAC Secretariat will relay the Declaration to the Sectoral Council on Environment and Natural Resources Management and the Council of Ministers to inform regional priorities and the development of climate-related projects.
