My take on the 2024 presidential election: The Democratic Party has shown a remarkable lack of strategy by missing the chance to replace Biden with a new refreshing candidate; instead choosing to put forward Biden’ Vice President Harris. (1/18)

Seems like a good time to re-read this paper
🚨New working paper: Based on a conjoint experiment from 32 countries, citizens - quite uniformly - value what the typical electoral autocrat claims to provide: elected leaders & (economic) safety, while commitment to executive constraints is much weaker. osf.io/preprints/osf/agrjq

Harris or Trump? Some claim that the future of Europe depends on the American elections, while it depends first and foremost on us. On condition Europe finally grows up and believes in its own strength. Whatever the outcome, the era of geopolitical outsourcing is over.

What the left needs now is a real Resistance. One that takes on and defeats identity politics, declinism, race-baiting, censorship and anti-Americanism. One that embraces Western values of liberty, growth, free speech, and celebrates the greatness of our civilisation.

If Trump wins, the right response for Europe is not to cry publicly, but to take a deep breath and return with a wise plan for rebalancing in NATO to save it. And boost European support for Ukraine like now.

Terje Tvedt svarer på min metodekritikk av "Norske tenkemåter". Lesere får dømme selv, men i mine øyne gir dette uttrykk for dyp forskningsmetodologisk forvirring. morgenbladet.no/ideer/debatt…

Our household has a first! @samvannoort’s research is solicited and gets cited in a @nytimes opinion piece (which he only mentions to me today in passing). More proud of his excellent paper published recently in @World_Pol on which the citation is based 👇

Tviler. nrk.no/norge/nicolai-tangen-…

Fun to present at @uniessexgovt yesterday, on "Elites as Democratic Gatekeepers" (co-authored with @SirianneD , @KajaBakke and @DANG2718), (sadly) increasingly relevant topic.. Thanks to @dianebolet and Kristian Gleditsch for organizing.

North Korea is at war with a major European country. This is an astonishing development, met with equally astonishing silence from Europe’s leaders. @CurtainSilicon

And yet still the narratives of an inevitable Russian victory…endless manpower…etc persist. This Russian mob can be beaten in the field. If enough people around the world accepted that, next year’s map by @dim0kq would look very different.
Here is how much Russia advanced in one year - 2023-2024. For a country of their military might, it's nothing. For Ukraine, it's thousands of lives lost heroically protecting Ukrainian Freedom so that war is somewhat contained. No conclusions, just facts.
