I just discovered that an hour of teaching burns more calories than an hour of football.
My smartwatch is curious: What did you do in the morning? Maybe HIIT? CrossFit? Rope jump? Boxing? Kickboxing? Zumba?
The correct answer: I gave a mathematical economics lecture to 350 young, eager minds.

Is this happening a lot:
you interact with chatGPT to solve an interesting (TCS/math) question; after 50 prompts, you get some midly interesting result (that would have been a good paper not long ago) and a 50-page page written by the AI.
But then, you're too tired (1/2)

A modest proposal for overhauling the review process in economics in light of AI. Three steps:
1. A substantial number of human referees (~5?) read the paper and prepare a short (~2 paragraph max) assessment of the overall importance and any glaring concerns. These are returned quickly, e.g. within 2-3 weeks
2. The editor decides from the paragraphs whether to send the paper out to a single expert reviewer. Otherwise, desk reject
3. A single human expert works with an open-source AI reviewer to prepare a detailed report, drawing on the initial paragraphs as helpful. This gets sent to the editor who decides R&R/reject (after potentially also consulting the AI)
The idea is to get a larger sample of opinions for the initial filter, and reduce intense human reviewing time to make the overall process quicker. Single-reviewer assignment may also improve incentives / responsiveness and avoid divergent recommendations for review. Plus, a desk reject would always come with many short reports for future improvement.
Just one idea

Love @nikitabier's work, but this is just completely misleading. Links on Twitter aren't penalized *per se* in the (open source!) algorithm, but what posts show up for others is highly dependent on likes/replies which are lower when users click out. Let's see why: 1/3
Very proud to receive this year’s @UoNEconomics Lecturer of the Year award for a UG core module. Teaching 400+ first-year students is hard, fun, chaotic, and rewarding. Occasionally even effective.
It feels great to be included in this list. Refereeing is mostly invisible work, so it is good to see journals recognizing careful reports.

Good old Joel. He is exactly the same, with exactly the same advice, as 15 years ago when we were students going to the notorious Northwestern econ history seminar series. That was old school academia rigor!
"The perfect is the enemy of the very good."
Joel Mokyr gives some important advice that can be applied to most subjects aside from mathematics – don't expect perfection. He says he does his best, acknowledges what he does not know and moves on.
Mokyr was awarded the 2025 prize in economic sciences for having identified the prerequisites for sustained growth through technological progress.

Internet drama in 3 parts:
@danielluo_pi challenges people to extend his latest paper using frontier AI models
@MathKyle takes him on it, producing 10 sections + 2 appendices w/ AI
@AndreyFradkin runs a Refine review, shows in 10 min that it's slop through and through
Here's a @RefineInk analysis. The future of academic discourse is likely to be even more adversarial, and we'll need tools like Refine to debunk these types of efforts.
