How do you measure how much violating content is seen on a social media platform? Today, we published a detailed blog on how Meta measures prevalence -

For a long time a common Facebook PM interview question concerned whether we should build “verified checkmarks” for people. I think we asked this so much (and so many people got it right) we had to stop asking it.
And now we see why you have to get these things right.

Apple's Data & Privacy statement starts with the calming phrase "Apple believes privacy is a fundamental human right" then goes on to describe how the platform aggressively collects your data. You must accept the statement or stop using your iPhone.

Looking for a social platform that:
- figured out how to do content moderation (hate, bullying,...)
- doesn't limit the length of posts & comments
- allows people to moderate comments on their posts
- favors meaningful, substantial discussions over invective
There is Facebook 😉!

Goes without sayin, but actual free speech isn’t dependent on whether Arby’s buys enough ads to promote two for one roast beef sandwiches
Spot on. I often wish there’s an end to this infinite game.

Some companies give onerous take-home assignments (>10 hours) for PM interviews, thinking that is fine because candidates “excited about the job” will spend that time, but this filters out people who are serious about their *current* job and these are the people you need to hire.
This is a great reframing of social media; I hadn’t heard it stated so clearly - or correctly: “The essential truth of every social network is that the product is content moderation, and everyone hates the people who decide how content moderation works.”

TikTok's biggest moat is that it is by far cooler than any other content platform. The problem is, that's a terrible moat. Nothing popular stays cool for long.
There’ll be a lot of upset parents if google photos stops auto-adding every one of their children’s photo into the shared photo album with grandparents.
Texas attorney general decided this year to enforce state’s biometric privacy law from 2009. Meta was sued in February and Google sued today for the collection of Texans’ face and voice recognition info by Google Photos, Nest cameras and Google Assistant. nytimes.com/2022/10/20/techn…

Basically, we are tracking how much additional engagement you can expect to get with a reasonably well crafted lie.
None of the platforms do great. Instagram does the least bad, with a factor of 2.9. Twitter the worst, with a factor of 35. 5/

More evidence that social media debates feel toxic because social media *breaks* echo chambers:
"It is not isolation from opposing views that drives polarization but precisely the fact that digital media bring us to interact outside our local bubble."
Social media has been broadly linked to intensifying political polarization.
But why would social media drive polarization?
My new paper in PNAS suggests that the reason might not be what you think... 🧵

Listening to @Marketplace coverage of AZ prop 211 stopping anonymous campaign donations. Reflexively I agree we should! But @jkosseff’s anonymity book got me thinking... Curious for his take on whether strong anonymity protections should extreme to campaign donations?

Correcting COVID "Infodemic" misconceptions:
Fox News viewership had the greatest effect on attitudes (not social media)
News consumption was way up for trustworthy sources (vs. untrustworthy sites)
& cross-cutting sources (vs. like-minded sources)
