29 September ‘46 The two great planting months, October and November, are close upon us; and those #gardeners who desire the maximum of rewards with the minimum of labour would be well advised to concentrate upon the flowering shrubs and flowering trees. #gardening

Google Books is becoming a desert. Its regress is real: the knowledge we were assured was both safely stored and freely available, which led libraries and schools to get rid of their books, has retreated into the shadows. The internet of 2026 knows less than the internet of 2010.
Why is Google Books removing access to out-of-copyright books that it once hosted as open access? There is a good chance that the mass-deaccession policy of libraries, on the ground that "it's available for free online", will be one of the most stupid acts of modern curatorship.

Reading a review of Colin Kidd’s Twilight of the Dons, reminded of @SussexUni’s nickname, Balliol-by-the-sea. Not quite so apt these days.

What on earth is a ‘data leader’? And why can our professional organisation’s publisher not find books to publish about librarianship by British librarians?
A must-read for CDOs and data leaders seeking to set a data-driven culture and empower staff to use data efficiently, Why Data Culture Matters by award-winning data leader Marion Shaw is out now. Order here: ow.ly/GhpO50ZyTjU #CDO #DataCulture #AIStrategy

Social media is going to be very confusing this week. The real #icml26 starts tomorrow in Glasgow (the quinquennial International Congress on Medical Librarianship). At the same time the usurper International Conference on Machine Learning is finishing in South Korea
