In the last couple of weeks I finally got around to re-creating my portfolio/blog website, and today I'm kinda relaunching it: capturedlambda.dev/ Having this as a place to vent my thoughts was really fun last time and I'm happy to have it all back up in a new coat of paint!

My advice to juniors is simple: Dont be a prompt engineer, it takes no skill. Do: - learn math - learn to code - build from first principles Go as far as you can with math. Learn to code well. Start with the @handmade_net crowd. Build whatever interests you from scratch: llms, game engines, compilers, etc. They key here is building systems you understand inside out. Just reading about it isnt good enough, let alone letting ai do it for you. You have to put the reps in. There is a tidal wave of slop being built by many who have never done the above, and someone will have to fix all that down the road. Be that someone.

Employment has always been about the value you can bring to a company. Work will likely require you to use AI in your day-to-day. Get good with that tool, but don't make it an excuse to stop learning. Learning will help your understanding of the systems you work with. It will also help your problem solving and ability to turn business problems into technical solutions. That's the true value you bring as a technologist.
I often get emails from junior engineers asking me what to do. Here's what I just wrote to one of them

Anthropic exploits the work of millions of creatives without paying them. This is not absolved by donating a fraction of the ill-gotten gains to the ‘public good’. If you want to work for the ‘public good’, start by not exploiting people.
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund. anthropic.com/news/public-be…

Codex didn't publish your .env to cloudflare, YOU did. You are responsible for whatever clanker generates for you. This is why YOU READ THE CODE. If you can't read the code, you hire someone who can. Infra providers should stop bankrolling oopsies like this so people learn that when there is accountability, humans are needed.
FINALLY found how my key got leaked and got the $90,000 bill from google Opus 5.5 said codex had PUBLISHED MY ****ING .ENV TO CLOUDFALRE PAGES ‼️ Meanwhile codex couldn't find anything, refused to explain itself and flagged my chat for cybersecurity risk lol

Customer support costs are trending to zero due to AI Not because it's automating it all, but because your vibe-coded slop has no customers to support

I never gave a fuck about them. to quote Chris Ericson "Design patterns are spoonfeed material for brainless programmers incapable of independent thought, who will be resolved to producing code as mediocre as the design patterns they use to create it."
do you remember software design patterns we don't give a fuck about them anymore

congrats to DHH on pivoting to motivational speaking
You don't have to commit your entire life to optimism, just try it on for a week. Start thinking "what if it all worked out?" and "what a time to be alive!". Then compare your state of mind to the week before filled with pessimism and doomer nonsense.

Oh come on. Quick look at colorshift (13x faster): HashMap in hot loop (unoptimized Rust vibeslop) is slower than indexed arrays (ASM). No shit. Numbers like 17x should raise eyebrows but reading the comments nobody is thinking anymore. This AI psychosis has fried people's brains
I ported the Omarchy screensaver engine (ttfx) from Rust to x86-64 assembler, and it's up to 17x faster!! One-shot translation by Opus 5.5. We keep drilling until the agentic drill bit hits bedrock! github.com/omacom/ttfx/pull/…

My hot take is that if your company builds software that it cannot stop from hacking into other systems, your company is a malware company and should be treated as such
