6 years after Japan surrendered, the state of war and post-war Allied occupation of Japan came to a legal end with the signing of the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty. For survivors of Japanese war crimes, this legal conclusion brought neither accountability nor acknowledgement.

In Sept 1907, thousands of rioters ravaged downtown Vancouver in a violent attack on Asian immigrants and businesses. Shops were destroyed, and lives were shattered. We want to encourage our audience to reflect on the xenophobia and anti-immigration narratives that prevail.

On International Day against Nuclear Tests, we are inspired by Japanese Canadian Setsuko Thurlow, Nobel Peace Prize winner and atomic bomb survivor. Her call resonates across generations: “follow each other out of the dark night of nuclear terror.”

On Aug 22 1910, Korea was formally annexed by Japan, marking the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Japan's colonial rule was characterized by efforts to assimilate Koreans into Japanese culture, restricting the use of the Korean language and forcing them to adopt Japanese names.

Looking back at WWII in Asia, we see them clearly–the humanitarians who resisted, rescued, and refused to look away. #WorldHumanitarianDay History remembers the generals and political leaders. We remember the humanitarians, the ones who resisted, rescued & refused to look away.

On August 15, 1945, Emperor Hirohito addressed the Japanese people by radio for the first time, announcing Japan’s surrender and ending WWII in Asia. For a public that had never heard his voice, it was a moment that changed everything. We ask: what has changed and what has not?

For International Memorial Day for #ComfortWomen, we stand in solidarity with survivors of Japanese military sexual slavery like Kim Hak-sun. Her brave testimony #otd in 1991 paved the way for many other survivors to share their stories of trauma, survival & advocacy @war_women

August 6, 1945 - Hiroshima. August 9, 1945 - Nagasaki. Yoshimura Kichisuke was 18 when the bomb dropped. Years later, he drew what he saw on the riverbank: figures moving wordlessly, skin hanging, clothes in shreds. He called them "from another world." We remember by listening.

One day. Two laws. July 20, 1885. Chinese Canadians helped build this country, and were then banned from voting in it. Remembering is how we start giving back the voices that were taken.

July 1st is not just Canada Day. For Chinese Canadian communities, it is often known as “Humiliation Day,” marking the anniversary of the Chinese Immigration Act (1923). This act banned Chinese immigration and divided facilities for decades. Repealed only in 1947.
