I was in the first year of Infant School at the time of #Aberfan. We were asked to take a penny to school to send to the children. Not knowing what “Aberfan” was, I told my mother I had to take in money “for a caravan”. She came to school and got to the bottom of it.

We’d have more chance of getting young people into work if this appalling logjam of the driving test system could be fixed. 24 week wait locally if you can snag a booking , but with 21k ahead of you at 6am every Monday morning, unlikely.

Sadly, I don’t think the @ITV exposé will move the needle. People support @reformparty_uk BECAUSE it’s a racist party. It needs racism to exist. Reform legitimises racism and turns it into a “political view”. Hatred should never have been given a home in mainstream discourse

"Devolution was never meant to stop at Holyrood." What does that even mean? Labour introduced devolution, and were in charge for the first eight years. Did they not do what they were "meant" to do? Why not?
Devolution was never meant to stop at Holyrood. The PM is right to offer to work with the Scottish Government to push power out into Scotland’s regions. That must include the Highlands and Islands where we have felt the impact of SNP centralisation over the last two decades.

There are only 700k job vacancies in the UK with over 1.6million people already actively looking for work. Where are the jobs comging from, for all the young people Milburn wants to force into work? ft.com/content/c6e911dd-440b… via @ft

Burnhans right. The 'Union' does make "us" (England) stronger. But it's designed to make Scotland weaker. #EnglandsCashCow
I asked Andy Burnham if he would categorically rule out an IndyRef2 taking place during his premiership. This was the PM’s response.

Let's be honest, this whole push is about undermining the Scottish Parliament and devolution, not extending it. A divided Scotland is easier to control for the English Parliament.

Burnham digging a bigger hole by saying Motherwell is ‘true north’.👇 Clueless. Tell that to Inverness, Lerwick, Aberdeen, Stornoway etc etc.

Why is asking for disability support treated as a confession of failure? We disabled people shouldn’t have to apologise for having additional needs or prove our moral worth just to be treated with dignity! #DisabilityJustice

If a disabled person’s life becomes harder because support is unavailable, why blame that person instead of questioning why the support was unavailable? You cannot fix a problem by attacking the people experiencing it! #DisabilityJustice

The tabloids have invented this alternate-universe Britain where you phone the DWP, tell them you’ve got a peanut allergy or a sore finger, and suddenly they’re paying your rent and buying you a free car - and somehow, people believe that’s how it actually works.

I’m severely disabled and largely bedbound. I don’t claim housing benefit because I paid off my own home before I became ill. I also don’t use Motability: after a very long delay I’m now occasionally hoisted into a chair for short periods, but I remain mostly confined to bed. The benefits I receive are not overly generous for someone in my position. I have to pay people to do many of the things I used to manage myself—tasks carers aren’t allowed to perform even when they’re willing. I live with anxiety, yet I can’t have a support dog because I’m unable to look after one. Losing the companionship of a dog has been particularly painful. PIP, when I can access it, is essential. (That’s a separate issue: difficulty getting help to renew my claim left me without it for the entire year, and it’s still being processed.) It doesn’t just cover the basics; it allows me to save a little and occasionally afford small treats that make life feel worth living. I don’t accept that it’s reasonable for me to be left eating the bare minimum, prison-standard food for the rest of my life after the large contributions I made while working. I also don’t expect I’ll ever be able to afford a holiday again, even if one were practically possible. We’re seeing rising hostility towards disabled people as a result of the country’s economic problems. This hostility has two main drivers. The first is more obvious: people who claim disability benefits but don’t appear “very disabled.” Disability can be highly variable. Some people are only able to get out and about and look relatively well because of the support that extra money provides. Others may simply be having a good day. A very small minority are genuine fraudsters who should be prosecuted and barred from further claims—but they are not representative of the majority. The second driver is that many working people are not being paid enough, and in some areas there simply isn’t enough work. Those claiming benefits are, in effect, being topped up by people who are working hard. This situation has two main causes: the high cost of living driven by net-zero policies, and the scale of migration—begun under the Conservatives and continued under Labour, with support from the Liberal Democrats and Greens. The current level is economically unsustainable. We now have people working extremely hard who still struggle to afford the basics. That is not acceptable. This is not solely a problem of illegal immigration. Large-scale legal migration also suppresses wages and increases pressure on welfare. We are often told that migrants are simply doing jobs British people won’t do, yet the NHS—our largest employer—recruits heavily from abroad while UK-trained staff, including many young doctors, struggle to find work or leave for Australia and elsewhere. That policy is indefensible. An independent review has also found that the mental health of young people has deteriorated sharply. Contributing factors include money worries, exaggerated climate-disaster messaging, gender-identity ideology, and repeated claims about the “far right” that have left many young people less resilient and in a state of permanent anxiety. These pressures feed into the broader economic and social strain. The current political system—the Uniparty approach across the main parties—has failed the people of this country. It cannot continue.

These aren’t jobs, the article says they are four week placements for which kids just get their benefit money. And what will happen to young people currently employed by these firms on zero hour contracts- will they lose their jobs to make way for the free labour ?
Thank you to @UKHofficial for announcing 100,000 new jobs for young people not in education, employment or training over the next few years. This comes on top of a similar agreement reached last month with UK retail. theguardian.com/society/2026…

🚨EXCLUSIVE: ANTONIA ROMEO CREATES 200,000 POUND CIVIL SERVICE JOB TO RUN BURNHAM NORTHERN EMPIRE!! Well well well, look at how the establishment cuts costs when they think the public is not looking. Cabinet Secretary Antonia Romeo is advertising a brand new Permanent Secretary role paying an eye watering 200,000 pounds of taxpayer cash. The chosen bureaucrat is being hired to build a bloated new department so Andy Burnham can spend two days a week playing regional king from Manchester. Labour stripped winter fuel support from freezing pensioners and warned of brutal Budget tax hikes, yet they magically found hundreds of thousands of pounds for a luxury civil service sidekick. While ordinary taxpayers battle to pay their bills, Whitehall is busy inventing six figure state jobs to stroke Burnham ego. Retweet this immediately to expose the 200,000 pound bureaucratic gravy train Burnham is running on your dime. 🇬🇧🔥
