This headline from this issue of the Daily Mail - which I’ve had on file for many years - is from 2012. It’s referring to the Liverpool Care Pathway, a hospital protocol which was banned in 2014 for being barbaric and inhumane. Shockingly, it was reintroduced by Matt Hancock under the title of NG163 in April 2020 despite protests from doctors and professors. In short, this death pathway involves the withdrawal of food, water and essential meds and the administration of a killer combination of a benzodiazepine (usually midazolam) and an opioid (usually morphine) given via injection or syringe driver. It’s been renamed since but is still being used, often on patients who are nowhere near the end of their lives.
