We expect our leaders to be statesmen and stateswomen, but in invoking 'free speech' ideals to enforce #censorship for their own political ends, they show themselves to be authoritarian bullies.
Anti-woke attacks on universities – rather than good faith criticisms – follow a coordinated and predictable playbook of select inflammatory anecdotes, generalized allegations intended to discredit entire disciplines or institutions, #disinformation and harassment campaigns, information requests and media pile-ons and other tactics, @Cambridge_Uni and @CambUP_Psych researchers @Sander_vdLinden and Alan Jagolinzer write in @timeshighered. They contend that these tactics seek to silence inconvenient research while selectively invoking free speech.
The business and social scientists distinguish legitimate scrutiny — which requires evidence, transparency, formal investigation and due process — from personal attacks and demands for instant punishment, warning that universities underestimate these campaigns’ aggression. They urge academics to uphold rigorous research standards, expose attackers’ incentives and conflicts of interest, remain publicly engaged, and resist pre-emptive compliance with political pressure. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/anti-w…
Could AI-generated political robocalls pose new risks to voters?
The Federal Communications Commission is considering a proposal to ease restrictions on AI-generated political robocalls ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections. According to The Associated Press, conservative advocacy group Club for Growth has requested permission to place automated political calls to cell phones without obtaining prior consent. The proposal has raised concerns about the potential use of artificial intelligence to spread false or misleading election information. Supporters argue that existing restrictions limit political speech and hinder voter outreach efforts.
However, critics warn that expanding access to automated calls could make it easier to distribute fabricated political statements, misleading voting instructions, and impersonations of public officials. #AI voice-cloning technology can replicate recognizable voices, potentially making deceptive messages appear credible to unsuspecting voters. During the 2024 presidential primary, voters in New Hampshire received AI-generated robocalls impersonating former President Joe Biden and discouraging participation in the election. @FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez has raised concerns about voter confusion and the consequences of changing regulations shortly before a federal election. The FCC is accepting public comments on the proposal through Oct. 19 and has not announced a final decision. The debate highlights how advances in artificial intelligence could amplify election #misinformation and complicate efforts to distinguish legitimate political communication from deliberate deception. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/associ…

Social media specialist and The University of Alabama senior Riyan Barnett recaps this week's #Misinformation Headlines on #TheIntegrityProjectChannel on @YouTube.
• Researchers presenting at the recent American Academy of Pediatrics meeting in San Diego found that medical 'influencers' create nearly three-fourths of all inaccurate videos related to the controversial topic of acetaminophen and autism, which is causing confusion and consternation among expectant mothers.
• Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to trademark her voice in the European Union as concerns grow over #AI-generated hashtag#deepfakes and misinformation. The move aims to provide additional legal protection against unauthorized uses of her voice, including AI-generated imitations.
• Lastly, should we rely solely on AI chatbots to research election propositions and candidates? Probably not. Partisan news outlets designed to look like reputable independent local news are increasingly shaping AI chatbot answers and creating concerns for the upcoming midterm elections, NewsGuard reports. An audit of seven major chatbots found that partisan outlets were cited in 48.2 percent of responses to election-related prompts.

Can we rely on tech companies to help lift us out of our current communications crisis of information bubbles, AI imagery and influencer content – especially as related to elections? After all, much of today's difficulties stem from their products.
Well, a suite of new offerings from @Microsoft suggests the former; some are aimed at our elections system and others at the classroom and future information consumers. A new partnership between Minecraft Education @PlayCraftLearn and @icivics, which the company calls 'Village Square,' provides educators and families an engaging, nonpartisan way to help young people practice listening to different perspectives, weighing trade-offs and working together to build stronger communities. 'Check. Recheck. Vote.' urges voters to check citations, compare original sources, and confirm voting procedures with official state or local election websites. Educational videos and classroom resources, partnerships with state elections officials, reliable news and educational orgs like The News Literacy Project and The Associated Press, leveraged with the company's information security and AI detection capabilities, are certainly a step in the right direction. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/micros…

This is a wake-up call. Our social media is being manipulated by foreign agents with the express intention of sowing hatred, mistrust, and misinformation among Americans.
Russia is behind a lot of it, using programs designed to disrupt our country and turn us against each other. We should be cynical about what we see on social media, and not fall for the rage bait.
This is also a national security issue and if the social media companies dont take immediate action, they are complicit. It's time for real regulation that requires them to find and shut down foreign bot networks, and holds them accountable when they don't.
So what happens when social media no longer needs us to be, well, social?
University of Amsterdam researchers suggest that AI's breathtaking ability to create makes human efforts all but obsolete, leaving social groups further 'splintered' into echo chambers as AI-driven bots and synthetic media – rather than human interaction and user content – drive algorithms. Active users become passive 'viewers' in this environment, encouraging an exodus from public platforms with varying points of view toward closed spaces and special interests.
The Amsterdam researchers show that these dynamics give rise to a post-social environment of algorithmically governed platforms, semi-private micro-communities, and new forms of unknown AI communication with distinct implications for #misinformation, #disinformation, governance, and our shared reality. Understanding this transformation, they say, demands a fundamental reorientation of the field and new conceptual tools that move beyond networked publics and participatory culture with renewed attention to the political stakes of communication systems that no longer require human participation.

Watch MAGA X invent a scandal about James Talarico in real time.
For four days they teased it and built up to the big day. Paxton called him "missing." Spencer Pratt's "sources" put him in a mental health facility. Then, at 1:05 pm, Nick Sortor posted that an Ohio mental hospital "confirms" Talarico was discharged.
50 accounts pushed the claim within 20 minutes. Those posts have 9.3 million views.
The white dots are copy-pasted posts. There are 605 of them. One account posted the same text 83 times in under 2 hours.
The hospital says Talarico never received treatment there. Talarico says he's never even been to Ohio.
This story eventually even made it to MSM. This is MAGA manufacturing an alternative reality in real time.

At 1:05 p.m. on Oct 11, Nick Sortor posted that an Ohio mental hospital “CONFIRMS” James Talarico was discharged. That evening the hospital said Talarico never received treatment there. Talarico says he's never even been to Ohio. Rhein Amacher, who made the recorded call, posted that he made up a verification code to get past the front desk.
This story occurred over several days. Ken Paxton called Talarico “missing” on Oct 7. Sara Gonzales teased “unverified information” that would “END his campaign” on Oct 8. On Oct 9, Spencer Pratt said his sources put Talarico in a mental health facility, and a handful of accounts pasted near-identical “credible sources are leaking” posts. At 7:50 a.m. on the 11th, Sortor gave Talarico a deadline, “let us know by 1pm ET today.”
The earlier pushes never fully took off, and acted more as a booster for the posts that came later. Pratt's post got 6.4 million views, but only about 60 accounts posted about the story in the hour after it. Caroline Wren's private-plane theory the next day drew about 40. Before the 11th, the story never topped 80 posts an hour. In the first hour after Sortor's post, 267 accounts posted about it, and by 3 p.m. it was running at almost 500 posts an hour.
The first chart counts each account only once, at its first post about the story. Nothing they posted after that is counted, so it shows who started this and how far those first posts went. The first wave carried the whole thing. Sortor's post and the posts that followed in the next 12 minutes have 9 million views between them. The 55 accounts that joined in the first 20 minutes got 80% of the views in that lane. The other lines never came close. “He lied and covered it up,” the line Elon Musk and Richard Grenell pushed, got about 2 million views across 100 accounts. “He was in an Ohio mental hospital” got about 2 million across 132.
The pushback grew the opposite way, the way a real response does. It started small and kept building all afternoon and evening, with 12 to 46 new accounts joining every hour from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Leave out the three biggest posts, which were the hospital's statement, Talarico's reply and Ed Krassenstein's own call to the hospital, and regular accounts pushing back still reached 6 million views. The claim had nearly 90% of its views by 2 p.m. and barely grew after that. By the end of the night, the pushback had more views than the claim, 13 million to 11.4 million.
The second chart is the inorganic behavior, and it covers Oct 8 to 11, not just the day of the "exclusive". Sortor's headline was reposted word for word, or nearly, by 18 other accounts, half of them with under 1,000 followers. Caroline Wren's private-plane post was copied by 14. Four accounts posted the same Eric Daugherty post within 74 seconds of each other. Four more posted the same MAGAVoice line within 54 seconds, four hours after it first went up. Some accounts barely post anything of their own. One copied 21 of its 23 posts about Talarico from other accounts, another 11 of 11. And the spammers flooded the replies. One pasted the same reply 85 times in about two hours, another 15 times in 10 minutes.
Views are each post's total as of early Oct 12. A copy means word for word or at least 90% the same as an earlier post.
I pulled and analyzed about 14,000 posts for this. Sharing it helps more than anything, and if you want to chip in so I can keep doing this, the links are in my bio. It goes a long way.
How has TikTok spread #misinformation about acetaminophen and autism? A recent presentation explains.
Misinformation about #acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism has gained significant attention on @tiktok_us, presenters at the @AmerAcadPeds 2026 National Conference show. The researchers analyzed 53 TikTok videos discussing acetaminophen, commonly sold under the brand name #Tylenol, and its potential connection to autism. Researchers also found that #influencers created nearly three-fourths of the videos classified as misinformation, while health professionals in the sample posted information consistent with available evidence. Some misleading videos included conspiracy theories or expressed distrust of pharmaceutical companies. The researchers said the findings demonstrate how inaccurate health information can receive significant exposure on social media. The study also highlights concerns about people relying on influencers rather than medical professionals for health information. Researchers encouraged medical institutions to become more active on social media and provide accessible, evidence-based information to counter misleading health claims. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/medica…

Can Trademarking Your Voice Protect You From AI Deepfakes?
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to trademark her voice in the European Commission as concerns grow over AI-generated #deepfakes and #misinformation. The application, filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, includes a four-second recording of @GiorgiaMeloni saying, 'I am Giorgia Meloni.'
The move could provide additional legal protection against unauthorized uses of her voice, including AI-generated imitations. Advances in generative artificial intelligence have made it easier to create realistic audio that mimics the voices of politicians, celebrities and other public figures. These tools can also be used to produce misleading content that falsely portrays someone saying something they never said. Meloni has previously been targeted by manipulated content circulated online, highlighting concerns surrounding the misuse of AI-generated media. Trademarking her voice would not prevent deepfakes from being created, but it could provide another legal avenue for challenging unauthorized uses.
Other public figures have pursued similar protections as governments and technology companies consider how to address increasingly sophisticated AI-generated content. Meloni’s application reflects broader efforts to protect personal identities and limit the spread of #disinformation as deepfake technology becomes more accessible. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/giorgi…

Should we rely solely on AI chatbots to research election propositions and candidates? Probably not.
Partisan news outlets designed to look like reputable independent local news, known as 'pink slime' journalism, are increasingly shaping AI chatbot answers and creating concerns for the upcoming midterm elections – especially as more voters use chatbots and @Google AI summaries to research candidates and issues. A @NewsGuardRating audit of seven major chatbots found that partisan outlets were cited in 48.2% of responses to election-related prompts; in 7.7% of cases, they were the only cited source. Only one of 168 answers disclosed a source’s partisan nature, @politico reports.
NewsGuard shows that the process can 'launder' political messaging as chatbots present selectively framed claims in a neutral, authoritative tone, obscuring the outlets’ funding and agendas. The audit found citation rates ranged from 70.8% for @ChatGPT to 29.2% for @grok with publishing volume also contributing to partisan influence. It may be best to confer with official election literature and traditional news sources before you head to the polls or cast an early ballot. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/politi…

Is the newly launched America.gov chatbot a reliable source of public information?
The General Services Administration (@USGSA) introduced the website Tuesday, which offers a new AI-powered chatbot that uses government sources to answer questions about federal information and services. @AP reports that some of the chatbot’s responses changed shortly after the website launched, including not engaging with select topics or questions, suggesting an internal limitation against expressing political opinions, which we think is good. Yet, responses reportedly also varied among users asking about the same topic. The White House said the website is intended to make government information easier for Americans to access, pulling data from 29,000 agencies and websites, including Social Security Administration benefits, passport information, among others. The inconsistencies demonstrate both the challenges – and promise – of AI technologies within official records. Understanding where chatbot information comes from can help users evaluate the responses they receive. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/govern…

No, Kobe Bryant didn't vote in June's primary election. How election officials in Los Angeles prepare for social media #misinformation this November.
Michael Sanchez, the communications manager responsible for the team tasked to monitor election mis- and #disinformation in LA County, watched as viral election misinformation took off in real time during the June primaries. It was the fastest Sanchez has seen this type of misinformation spread in over 10 years working at the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office.
Posts spanned from untrue claims that @NBA star Bryant, who died in 2020, was still on @LACountyRRCC voter rolls, to #POTUS ’s @truthsocial post accusing Democrats of stealing the LA mayoral race. The spread of misinformation didn’t end when the polls closed on June 2. With the 2026 election season on the horizon, Sanchez and his team are building a social media framework around frequently repeated questions and claims regarding election security in order to be preventative and proactive in their response next month. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/los-an…

False or misleading claims about vaccine safety and efficacy becomes more apparent as kids have gone back to school and cases spike in Pennsylvania, Florida, Utah and Missouri. Meanwhile, recurring mis- and #disinformation regarding voting procedures, ballot counting and election security that creates confusion among voters and undermines confidence in election outcomes has prompted #Arizona to update its statewide portal just as early #midterm voting gets underway. Can AI be used for good in the fight against medical misinformation?
It’s possible depending on its tone and level of empathy, according to a new Washington State University study. The study suggests that #AI fact-checking bots cater to individual users’ level of anthropomorphism – the tendency to assign human characteristics to non-human entities.
Porismita Borah, a professor at WSU - Edward R. Murrow College of Communication and corresponding author of the new publication in the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, has spent the last decade studying how to effectively combat #misinformation in our evolving media landscape. Her recent study indicates that by implementing accurate tone-detection and empathy into AI responses, users may be more receptive to the correction of misinformed beliefs.
'In this study, it did not necessarily matter whether the correction came from a human being or an AI agent,' said Borah. 'What mattered was the tone and how the tone aligned with people's beliefs about whether AI agents should be more humanlike or machinelike.' 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/wsu-ai…

How are states preparing to combat election #misinformation? Arizona takes proactive measures.
Recurring false or misleading claims about voting procedures, ballot counting and election security that create confusion among voters and undermine confidence in election outcomes prompted #Arizona to update its elections portal, Arizona.vote, a user-friendly, updated version of My.Arizona.Vote, which has functioned since 2016. It’s fair to say that all involved in election administration would like to avoid the experience of 2020 when mostly unfounded claims led to recounts and a technical review by the now-famous @cyberninjas. AZ Secretary of State @Adrian_Fontes calls the new site proactive and preventative, aiming to provide Arizona voters clear, official explanations of how the state’s system works.
In Maricopa County, Recorder @azjustinheap, who administers more than 2.5 million registered voters in the state's largest district, also operates BeBallotReady.vote, a program championed by Heap's predecessor and a board member of The Integrity Project @stephen_richer.
