Last year 46,497 people were caught entering Britain illegally, most of them crossing the Channel in small boats, and the reason they keep coming is that they know a hotel room and years of processing are waiting for them at the other end, with very little chance they'll ever be sent home.
Restore Britain's new policy paper on detaining illegal arrivals sets out how we will end that.
A Restore Britain government would take every illegal arrival straight into secure detention and keep them there until they're removed.
There would be no hotels and no release into the community.
Nobody is going to hand a smuggler thousands of pounds for a crossing they know will end in a detention centre and a flight home, and once that becomes the reality the boats will stop coming.
To do that, we will build a 30,000 place detention estate across three centres to detain new arrivals - the existing illegal population is dealt with through a separate detention process.
It would be built quickly, using modular buildings on land the government already owns, with the Royal Engineers checking the standard of the work and a dedicated Act of Parliament behind it.
The estate has been sized so that even if crossings carried on at last year's rate and nobody was removed, there would still be room for seven or eight months, with space to expand at every site, so no one would ever be released simply because the government had run out of places to hold them.
Conditions inside would be kept basic, and caseworkers based in each centre would start on every case the day the person arrives, with the aim of having them removed within 24 hours.

Secure detention. Swift deportation.
It can be done. It must be done.
