Perhaps the single strongest argument to ending the filibuster, imo, is this.
Yes, it would surely result in much more partisan legislation on both sides, for good and ill. But at least the American people would get what they voted for.
I do have to point out here that while Trump's restructuring of America around a supreme presidency is more extreme than everything we've ever seen in our lifetimes, it's not an aberration.
If anything, it's the logical conclusion of decades of Congress declining in power, as dysfunction has made it unable to do its basic job.
Even before Trump, we have seen decades of both the President and the Supreme Court stepping in and basically assuming more and more indirect legislative powers because Congress is too partisan and gridlocked to pass major legislation anymore. Our lawmakers are constantly locked in petty squabbles. They mostly just pass overbloated omnibus bills that do a thousand little things for each special interest and nothing of consequence for the people. Half of all the new senators and congressmen these days seem to retire after one or two terms not out of some principled self-term-limiting, but out of a soul-crushing realization that nothing they're doing matters.
It's not hard to understand why there's a certain group of voters that likes the idea of a president who just steps in and declares, I'll get this done since no one else is doing it. It's the same reason that in the late Roman Republic, plenty of the citizenry were excited about the country being reorganized as the Roman Empire. Because the system was so clearly broken that one guy just stepping in and getting things done seemed like a breath of fresh air.

All these guys do is, talk about how xyz thing won't exist anymore. The whole marketing strategy of these AI duds is, scare young people into accepting AI as their savior.

the beautiful world we’re building with AI, where no one gets to have an intellectually rewarding job because this guy didn’t

Smug fatalism is the one position I can’t stand. When I was a kid, Spain, Portugal, and Greece were ruled by military dictators. Walls with barbed wire cut Berlin and Jerusalem in half. Being gay was illegal in Spain, and interracial marriage was forbidden in Virginia. You can make your own list of the changes you've seen, but the point is that humans have agency, nothing is static, and hope never dies. Onward!

These people are not ok.
This is anti-humanism: the deliberate subordination of humans to a manufactured authority.
If you believe AI is destined to be an omnipotent machine god, it leads to conclusions like the idea there are “useless” children.
This is moral suicide.

The AI maximalists say that we need AI to do all the jobs so that we can be freed to do more meaningful things like make art and read to our children. But then they also want AI to make art and read to our children. So what exactly will be left for humans to do? The answer, though they won’t admit it, is that we get to be passive consumers sitting around slack jawed staring at screens until we die. That’s the only form of happiness these people can conceive of. It’s all any of us should want, as far as they’re concerned.

Just pointing out the absurdity of people who have no skin in the game, who do everything they can to protect themselves from the consequences of their own actions, telling everyone else who's actually exposed to the risks "trust me bro, it's gonna be great".

If you really believe in the age of abundance or UBI, make yourself as exposed to the risks as the ordinary people you claim would benefit from being jobless. Give up your equity, billions, property, and, most of all, your bunkers. You’ll instantly become so much more convincing.

not to be flippant but I think that most of the people here saying Zohran committed *genocide* have severe personality disorders and it’s merely a result of circumstance that they’re here instead of storming the capitol on Jan 6th
I think part of the negative reaction against the OpenAI mathematics thing is that the work of thousands of exceptional individuals, who sacrificed very much in pursuit of their craft, is now being used to directly enrich a small handful of people. The benefits of all this research fall to precisely one group of shareholders who feel like they deserve Fields medals. Which is, frankly, disgusting.

The WHOLE purpose of UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME is that you don’t make your OWN MONEY anymore so that the government can STRIP YOU of your RIGHTS forever and provides you the ONLY SOURCE of INCOME , and the government controls you in the end.
Their OBJECTIVE is to STRIP you of your BARGAINING POWER , you have NO LABOR leverage anymore, total dependence on the state, which is itself dependent on tech companies for economic survival🚨👀.
Its a NEO-FEUDAL SYSTEM. The tech lords own the means of production (AI, automation), the government distributes the basic income, and the citizens are SERFS who consume what the lords produce.👀🚨
Notice None of these CEOs are voluntarily sharing their own wealth. They want the GOVERNMENT to fund UBI, not themselves.👀🚨
The TRICK is They need public acceptance of job displacement. If people believe UBI is coming, they won't resist automation.
They need political cover for AI development. If people believe the end result is utopia, they won't regulate AI.🚨
They need to prevent social unrest. If people believe a safety net is coming, they won't riot when they lose their jobs.
They need to position themselves as benevolent. This protects their brands, their stock prices, and their political influence.🚨
• The UBI promise is designed to make you complacent about losing your job and your economic power.
• It's designed to make you accept surveillance (biometrics, digital ID, CBDC) as the price of "free" money.
• It's designed to make you dependent on a system they control, so you can never challenge them.
the actual model is: CEOs automate jobs → workers lose income → government pays UBI → workers can still buy products from the CEOs' companies → CEOs get richer from both automation (lower labor costs) AND continued consumer spending (funded by government/taxpayers).
UBI is a wealth transfer FROM taxpayers TO tech companies. The taxpayer funds the consumer base that keeps tech companies profitable after they've eliminated the labor force.
And then who controls the government? Lobbyists, including tech company lobbyists.
Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon (@hilbertspaess) and Jon Stewart discuss AI, jobs disappearing, universal income, and whether tech CEOs are creating a dystopian future

The decision not to invite observers from the OSCE puts the U.S. alongside Russia and Belarus, while the Justice Department prepares to deploy its own poll monitors.
