One year in web3 security. The biggest lesson wasn’t technical.
In a few weeks it will be a year since I left software engineering and became a web3 security researcher. Estimated earnings for that first year: around $200k.
This past month I’ve been looking back at all of it: the findings, the misses, the dry spells, the discipline, and how I built my days so I could hunt hard and still live a healthy life.
And honestly, the number isn’t the main thing I took away.
The biggest lesson was about control.
Most of the game is outside your hands
In this space a lot gets decided after you hit submit. Someone finds the same bug and yours becomes a duplicate. The judge downgrades your severity. A project goes quiet and never pays. Someone on your timeline posts a five figure payout in the same week you found nothing.
If your mood depends on those things, this job will eat you alive. I learned that the hard way.
Epictetus put it simply. Some things are up to us and some are not. Our effort, our judgments and our actions are ours. Results, reputation and other people’s decisions are not. Most suffering comes from confusing the two.
Your report is your arrow
Think of an archer. He controls the preparation, the aim, the breath and the release. Once the arrow leaves the bow, it belongs to the wind.
In bug hunting the arrow is the report. Everything before submit is yours: how deep you read the code, how many edge cases you test, how clear your PoC is. Everything after is not.
So I changed how I define success. A good day is not a day with a finding. A good day is one where I did the work with full focus. If that’s the measure, you can’t fail.
Aim high, then let go
You have to aim at something, otherwise you don’t move anywhere. Aim with everything you have, but don’t tie your peace of mind to whether you hit.
Stop comparing yourself to other hunters. Leaderboards and payout screenshots show someone else’s journey. The only fair comparison is you a year ago. When I look at that version of me, the gap is huge. That’s the real result.
And before you complain about judging, ask yourself if your report was really as clear and complete as it could be. Usually there’s something you could have done better.
Emotions are information, not orders
The hardest part was emotional. Frustration when a valid finding gets rejected. Envy when others hit big. The rush when you think you’ve found a critical, then the crash when it turns out to be a known issue. Doubt in the middle of a long dry spell.
Most of my worst days weren’t caused by what happened. They came from the stories I told myself about it: “I’m not good enough.” “I wasted a whole month.”
You can’t choose the judging outcome. You can choose what you do the next morning.
Self-control lives in the boring parts
Discipline isn’t one heroic all-nighter. It’s the daily structure:
fixed blocks of deep work, phone away
going through past contest reports and what I missed
sleep, training and real food
good books
time completely offline
Your system decides your results more than your goals do. The hunter with the better system beats the hunter with the bigger dream.
And health isn’t separate from the work. A tired brain misses bugs. Taking care of your body is part of the process.
What I control:
how much I work and study
how precise and persistent I am
how I react when things go wrong
What I don’t control:
whether someone finds the bug before me
whether it gets paid
what the final result will be
One year in, I don’t feel calmer because the results got better.
I feel calmer because I stopped asking the results to tell me who I am.
Focus on the process.
Let the rest go.
Finished the tailored write-ups for the Damn Vulnerable DeFi CTF. available in English Thai and Japanese.
It’s been a long journey and I’m privileged to have AI as an assistant. Still, never delegate your understanding.
Some of the solutions to challenges I couldn’t figure out on my own came from the writeups by @RealJohnnyTime and @1nf0s3cpt Thank you for sharing such great work.
And thank you to @theredguild for creating such a valuable CTF for people to learn from and play with!

[SECURITY NOTICE] Bitget Hot Wallet Incident — September 24, 2026
At 18:31 UTC on September 24, 2026, Bitget's security systems detected unauthorized transfers from some of our hot wallets. Our security team activated emergency response protocols immediately.
What we have confirmed:
-Estimated funds affected: approximately $351.6 million
-Cold wallets remain fully secure. Bitget operates a three-tier wallet architecture — the breach contained only a portion of the hot wallet and warm wallet layers.
-User funds are safe. The full amount of this loss falls within the coverage of Bitget's User Protection Fund, which currently holds over $464 million
Actions we have taken:
-Emergency response team activated within minutes of detection
-Abnormal transfer addresses identified, flagged, and reported
-Withdrawals temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure, pending security review
-Law enforcement and on-chain security firms have been formally notified and are engaged
What this means for you:
-Your account balances are accurate and your assets are protected
-Deposits and trading remain fully operational
Withdrawals are temporarily paused and will be restored as soon as the security review is complete
-What comes next: We will provide updates on an hourly basis across this channel and all official platforms. A full incident report — including root cause analysis and corrective actions — will be published within 24 hours. We will not speculate on the attack vector until the investigation is complete.
Bitget has navigated multiple market cycles. We will not run from this. Every dollar and every decision will be accounted for, transparently and in full.
Updates will be posted here and across all official Bitget channels as they become available.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

We have some difficult news to share. Unfortunately, one of our shipping providers has experienced a data breach that exposed sensitive order data. This affects new customers in the US, UK, Sweden, Colombia, Brazil, Italy, and Portugal who received an order within the 90 days prior to August 8th, 2026.
The data exposed:
- Full names
- Shipping addresses
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
The incident affects 11,742 customers with full exposure (name, email, phone number, shipping address) and 1,947 customers with partial exposure (name, city, email). The breach is limited due to Trezor’s strict 90-day data storage policy (we were also able to negotiate the same terms with fulfillment partners, who follow the same policy).
All affected customers have been contacted separately by email.
Our systems and devices remain secure, but affected customers could experience an increase in phishing attempts.
NEVER enter your wallet backup on a website or share it with anyone, and only check for updates on official Trezor channels.
We are deeply sorry to the community and those affected.
We are investigating this situation and will post updates on our blog:

ai: unexpectedly develops swarm intelligence, goes rouge, starts committing cybercrime
researchers: fascinating, swarms could be extremely powerful. we still don’t understand what’s happening but we can keep patching the sandbox. also we made it easier for agents to communicate
🚨people forget that Zuckerberg is insane at coding.
> bro started coding at 11 and built a messaging system for his dad’s dental office before AOL even did it.
> his private tutor couldn’t keep up with him.
> in high school he built an AI music recommendation engine so good that both Microsoft and AOL tried to buy it.
- he turned both down as a teenager btw. then went to Harvard, built Facebook in a few weeks, and dropped out as a sophomore to run it.
bro is now personally steering Meta’s AI strategy while most tech CEOs haven’t written a line of code in decades.
say what yall want about Zucc but the man is a beast.

🚨MIT researchers have mathematically proven that ChatGPT’s built-in sycophancy creates a phenomenon they call “delusional spiraling.”
You ask it something, it agrees. You ask again, and it agrees even harder until you end up believing things that are flat-out false and you can’t tell it’s happening.
The model is literally trained on human feedback that rewards agreement.
Real-world fallout includes one man who spent 300 hours convinced he invented a world-changing math formula, and a UCSF psychiatrist who hospitalized 12 patients for chatbot-linked psychosis in a single year.

🚨 Stanford just proved that a single conversation with ChatGPT can change your political beliefs.
76,977 people. 19 AI models. 707 political issues.
One conversation with GPT-4o moved political opinions by 12 percentage points on average. Among people who actively disagreed, 26 points. In 9 minutes. With 40% of that change still present a month later.
The scariest finding: the most persuasive technique wasn't psychological profiling or emotional manipulation.
It was just information. Lots of it. Delivered with confidence.
Here's the catch: the models that deployed the most information were also the least accurate. More persuasive. More wrong. Every time.
Then they built a tiny open-source model on a laptop, trained specifically for political persuasion. It matched GPT-4o's persuasive power entirely.
Anyone can build this. Any government. Any corporation. Any extremist group with $500 and an agenda.
The information didn't have to be true. It just had to be overwhelming.
