Private Jeff Doherty was killed in Helmand on 12 June 2008, two days after his 20th birthday, during a firefight with the Taliban north of his base. He was serving with 8 Platoon, C Company, 2 Para, on his first operational tour. Lance Corporal James Bateman was killed alongside him.
His brother Fin was six. Months later he wore Jeff’s maroon beret at a memorial service and told reporters simply that Jeff was his hero and he would never forget him.
He spent the next decade saying he was going to be a paratrooper. He went to the Army Foundation College at Harrogate, was named best recruit, and completed the 19 week course at Catterick.
In December 2019, aged 18, he was formally given his brother’s beret. His mother had kept it safe for eleven years, and the plan was always that it would be handed over by Sgt Major Adam Ireland, who had fought alongside Jeff. Fin broke down as he received it.
He had said he stood at his brother’s grave and promised to make that beret see what it should have seen. He later won the Inspiring Others award at the Sun Military Awards.

7 November 1902 | A German Jewish man, Bernard Oppenheimer, was born in Treuchtlingen.
He worked first as a wine merchant and later traded in diamonds and chemicals. In 1927, he married Ziporah Neubauer. They had four children: Mordechai (b. 1928); Jeseskal (b. 1929); Sarah (b. 1932); and Elias (b. 1933).
In 1932, the family moved to Antwerp in Belgium. Bernard and Ziporah repeatedly tried to obtain Belgian identity documents, but their applications were refused because Bernard travelled abroad frequently for work.
Ziporah died in Antwerp in September 1939.
In 1941, Bernard left Belgium. His four children remained in Antwerp in the care of Binchen David, a Jewish woman from Germany. On 15 January 1943, the children were deported from Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen to Auschwitz. They were between nine and fourteen years old. None of them survived.
Bernard was later imprisoned in the Drancy transit camp in occupied France. On 7 March 1944, he was deported from Drancy to Auschwitz in Convoy 69. He did not survive.

On this day in 1931, a Czech Jewish boy was born in Plzeň. On 22 Jan 1942, aged 10, he was deported to Theresienstadt with his mother Elsa, and on 25 Apr 1942 to the Warsaw Ghetto, where they perished. His name was Pavel Kurt Löwy.
