Firefighters quickly contained a kitchen fire before it could spread in in Findlay Creek yesterday afternoon.
At approx. 15:04 yesterday, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from a resident reporting smoke coming from the window of their neighbour's house and an audible alarm could be heard in the 0-100 block of Spartina St. Upon arrival, Firefighters confirmed smoke on the first floor of the two-story townhouse. Firefighters initiated a fast attack and made their way inside. A secondary crew began searching the structure for any occupants. Firefighters located the fire on the oven and extinguished it before it could spread. The fire was declared "under control" at 15:16, 5min after arriving on scene. Firefighters disconnected the oven and brought it outside and confirmed there was no fire extension into the walls in the area of origin. Two full searches of the structure were completed and no occupants were found inside. High pressurized fans were used to ventilate the residual smoke out of the structure. There are no reported injuries. #OttNews

At approx 01:46 this morning, a 9-1-1 caller reported hearing a loud bang and believed a vehicle was on fire in the 4000 block of Leitrim Rd. After taking a closer look, the caller was able to confirm a shipping container was on fire. Upon arrival, Firefighters confirmed there were multiple exposures, including vehicles and other shipping containers, in close proximity to where the fire was. Besides spreading to one other container, all the exposures were protected. Firefighters used saws to cut holes in the shipping containers to apply water inside. Fire crews pulled out items from inside the containers (auto parts, appliances, garbage bags of clothes and other items) to make sure all the hot spots were extinguished. Firefighters worked hard to bring the fire under control at 05:56. An @OttFire investigator is currently on scene. No injuries. #OttNews

Firefighters successfully rescued a trapped worker from underneath multiple sheets of plexiglass that collapsed onto the worker's legs after the storage container holding them broke. The call came in at approx 11:55 for us to respond to the 3300 block of Rideau Rd. The extrication was in a very tight space and due to the heavy weight of each slab, combined with the time it would take, moving them manually one by one was not an option. Fire crews used hydraulic tools, cribbing and lift bags to lift the sheets off off the worker. Firefighters also used a sawzall to cut away some of the sheets. At 12:29, the worker was successfully extricated from the pile. #OttNews
