The single best predictor of founder success we’ve seen, above all else, is raw determination. Across the 100+ successful founders we’ve interviewed, we identified 7 signals that measure this: (1) A history of being under-estimated. There was always someone early in their life who doubted them, whether that be a sibling, parent, teacher or colleague. (2) Lifelong iconoclasts. Never fit in with the group. Quirky tastes in hobbies, music, food that others find unusual. (3) Some evidence of prior failure. Whether that be previous companies, product launches or career pivots, they always failed at least once (and often multiple times). (4) Irrationally optimistic. If their lead engineer quits or a funding round fails or a key customer churns, they are never pessimistic and never lose hope. Always glass half full. (5) Lack of financial motives. The desire to succeed was never driven by money. Cash served as a scorecard and nothing else. (6) Funding struggles. Almost all struggled with early funding rounds, but did not give up in the face of capital scarcity. Lack of capital forced discipline. (7) Institutional rejection. They were almost always rejected by a top institution early in their career (sports team, school, college or company).

Best paper I've read so far this month: All elementary functions (sin, cos, tan, exp, log, powers, roots, hyperbolic functions, π, e, and even basic arithmetic) can be generated from just one binary operator: eml(x, y) = exp(x) − ln(y) …plus the constant 1.

This is so scary we were attacked 7,922 times over the weekend after using Clawdbot. There are hundreds of Clawdbot servers exposed to the open internet this week. Credential dumps. API keys in plaintext. The thing people missed is that you're not the only input to your agent. Every email it reads, every calendar invite, every webpage it visits is content someone else wrote. Random person DMs you? That's now input to a system with shell access. If you're going to use it, treat it like onboarding a contractor. Dedicated machine or VPS. Separate accounts. Minimal permissions to start. Run it behind Tailscale so it's not exposed to the public internet. Run clawdbot doctor regularly and let it fix itself. The bigger idea is that agents need their own identities. Own devices, own accounts, own credentials. Not piggybacking on yours. Also please stop buying Mac Minis for this. You can run it on AWS free tier in five minutes or a $5 VPS.

Our Llama 3.1 405B is now openly available! After a year of dedicated effort, from project planning to launch reviews, we are thrilled to open-source the Llama 3 herd of models and share our findings through the paper: 🔹Llama 3.1 405B, continuously trained with a 128K context length following pre-training with an 8K context length, supports multilinguality and tool usage. It offers performance comparable to leading language models, such as GPT-4, across a range of tasks. 🔹Compared to previous Llama models, we have enhanced the preprocessing and curation pipelines for pre-training data, as well as the quality assurance and filtering methods for post-training data. 🔹Pre-training 405B on 15.6T tokens (3.8x10^25 FLOPs) was a significant challenge. We optimized our entire training stack and used over 16K H100 GPUs. 🔹To support large-scale production inference for the 405B model, we quantized from 16-bit (BF16) to 8-bit (FP8), reducing compute requirements and enabling the model to run on a single server node. 🔹We leveraged the 405B model to improve the post-training quality of our 70B and 8B models. 🔹In post-training, we refined chat models with multiple rounds of alignment involving supervised fine-tuning (SFT), rejection sampling, and direct preference optimization. We generate most SFT examples using synthetic data. 🔹We integrated image, video, and speech capabilities into Llama 3 using a compositional approach, enabling models to recognize images and videos and support interaction via speech. They are under development and not yet ready for release. 🔹We've updated our license to allow developers to use outputs from Llama models to enhance other models. There is nothing more rewarding than working at the forefront of AI development alongside some of the brightest minds in the field and publishing our research transparently. I'm excited about the innovations our open-source models enable and the potential of the future herd of Llamas!

✨ Microsoft 1-bit era paper (released in Feb) is really a masterpiece. 📌 BitNet b1.58 is a 1-bit LLM, where every single parameter (or weight) of the LLM is ternary {-1, 0, 1}. 📌 The term "1.58 bits" refers to the information content of each parameter. What "1.58 bits" means is that it is log base 2 of 3, or 1.5849625... Actually decoding data at that density takes a lot of math.Since each parameter can take one of three possible values (-1, 0, 1), the information content is log2(3) ≈ 1.58 bits. 📌 BitNet b1.58 is based on the BitNet architecture, which is a Transformer that replaces nn.Linear with BitLinear. It is trained from scratch, with 1.58-bit weights and 8-bit activations. 📌 Requires almost no multiplication operations for matrix multiplication and can be highly optimized. 📌 It matches the full-precision (i.e., FP16 or BF16) Transformer LLM with the same model size and training tokens in terms of both perplexity and end-task performance, while being significantly more cost-effective in terms of latency, memory, throughput, and energy consumption. 📌 More profoundly, the 1.58-bit LLM defines a new scaling law and recipe for training new generations of LLMs that are both high-performance and cost-effective. 📌 This paper enables a new computation paradigm and opens the door for designing specific hardware optimized for 1-bit LLMs.

Andrej Karpathy is a legendary researcher who helped start OpenAI and created Stanford's first deep-learning class. I watched @karpathy's 1h Intro to Large Language Models. Here are my top takeaways: > training models = lossy compression (gestalt of the text on the internet). There is a close relationship between compression and performance. > next word prediction objective forces the neural network to learn about a lot about the world. > nn "dreams" or "hallucinates". They are inscrutable artifacts, so we have to develop correspondingly robust evaluations. Process of building LLM: 1. pretraining -> train on the internet 2. fine-tuning -> align model via human-generated Q&A pairings (how the model gets good at following instructions) 3. RLHF -> train on the model on relative goodness of answers by ranking Increasingly, labeling is a collaboration between humans and machines. LLM scaling law says: The performance of LLMs is a smooth, well-behaved, predictable function of - N, the number of parameters in the network - D, the amount of text We can expect a lot of "general capability" across all areas of knowledge. LLMs could use tools (function calling) to augment their abilities. System 1 vs. System 2: > LLM currently only has system 1 fast thinking. > LLM doesn't have system 2 (tree search and tree of thought may help with this). Self-improvement: - What is the equivalent of AlphaGo self-play for LLMs? - Main challenge: lack of reward criterion (language is a large space and not well defined) "LLMs is the kernel process of an emerging operating system." - RAM = working memory = context window - Operating systems had closed and open source, the same applies to LLMs (llama2 vs. gpt4) LLM security is very new (vulnerable to jailbreaks, prompt injection, data poisoning) and evolving rapidly.
