🛡️ About the Project
Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) — organized immune hubs that form in tissues during chronic inflammation — are increasingly recognized as key sites of local immune activity, yet their formation and therapeutic potential remain poorly understood. This PhD project investigates TLS across several disease contexts: as part of the IMBRAIN project, you'll study TLS in the meninges of mouse models of activated PI3Kδ syndrome (APDS) with Erasmus MC collaborators, and lead investigations of TLS in tonsillar samples from APDS patients. You'll also compare TLS organization and immune composition in lung cancer versus lung transplantation, aiming to identify shared and disease-specific mechanisms that could guide targeted nanomedicine approaches, including modified lipid nanoparticles for modulating local immune responses.

Walsh Scholar PhD Scholarship: Understanding the Hydrology of Grassland Peat Soils
A fully funded PhD scholarship is available with Teagasc Moorepark, in partnership with the University of Galway, beginning September 2026.
This research forms part of the #PEATGENIE project, which aims to improve the use of environmental research data through artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI tools. The project will investigate the relationship between peat soil physical characteristics and peatland hydrology to improve understanding of water table dynamics and peatland condition.
The research will contribute to predicting changes in peatland condition and informing future management strategies, supporting climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and the sustainable management of natural resources across Europe.
The successful candidate will gain expertise in peatland science, soil physical properties, hydrology, and environmental data analysis while contributing to an interdisciplinary research programme developing innovative approaches to environmental monitoring and decision support.
The scholar will participate in the structured Walsh Scholars Programme and receive:
• €25,000 annual stipend
• University fees covered
• Four-year structured doctoral programme
• Opportunities for international research placement
