This is why I created @timelinize -- it can happen to you too
So @Apple perma banned my Apple ID tonight. Talked to support, they said absolutely nothing can be done and they can’t tell me why. The account was locked as I was trying to update my payment method — I’m assuming some security feature got tripped. Surely, there has so be a way to get resolution here? Just a perma ban with no recourse? @tim_cook, certainly the company’s customer service isn’t this far gone and ruled by algorithms that can be this flawed & triggered?

This project has a *30* *minute* tour video and I watched the entire thing, riveted: youtube.com/watch?v=VRhtEjz6… Several years ago I got in contact with @mholt6 about @timelinize. I had worked on @PerkeepOrg and @attic, which had similar goals, so we had a lot to discuss. All of these projects basically want(ed) to pull your data from all your online web services into a place you control – your person drive basically – and then automatically organize and make it useful. It's something I'd dreamed about for years. At the time, Matt's project was still pretty early and I basically warned him how hard it was. Importing data from every app and personal data source is a massive grind. Then to make a useful UI on top of that would be another huge project. I saw Timelinize on HN the other day and took a fresh look and I am completely blown away how far it has come. This is a massive labor of love and it deserves to have more people aware of it. Looking forward to giving it a deeper test soon.

Many nights and weekends over the course of 10+ years, and it's finally ready to show you. Still in the "proof of concept" stage, so expect some rough edges!

Notice how the file being imported is inside a zip archive. No need to extract your archives first. (Unless it's tar.gz, I recommend extracting those.)
Got a million things in your life? No problem. Timelinize can organize them. (New website and video demos coming soon.)

I’ve just updated builds and docs for @timelinize. The updated instructions should make it much easier to get started: timelinize.com/docs/install

I might rename @timelinize to Archeio and refresh the icon. Thoughts? (Discussion: github.com/timelinize/timeli…)

I just wrote fairly thorough documentation of the @timelinize database schema, so you can understand its design and how data is stored: github.com/timelinize/timeli…

So what are you importing into @Timelinize? (And what do you want to import that may not be supported yet?)

Today I'm open sourcing @timelinize, an ambitious project that organizes your life's data from your online accounts, photo library, phone, etc, onto a single unified timeline on your own computer. It will benefit from the community's help. 🧵 github.com/timelinize/timeli…

This isn't just a photo library. Nor is it just a map or a contact list. Timelinize is an ambitious attempt at unifying all your digital information for sharing, remembering, detailed journaling, and seriously owning your data.
Timelinize is a new way to store your photos and videos, messages, social media posts, location history, contacts, and so much more, on a single timeline on your own computer. The way we're doing it has never been done before.

We've developed an algorithm that we think cleans up your raw Google Location History data even better than Google does in some cases, without losing vital detail. Dark blue: Google Pink: Our result Orange-red: Raw Google displays a noisy spike jutting east-southeast.

It can put your received emails and text messages on a map
Before using Timelinize, first get your data from various accounts and devices you use: your phone, Twitter, Google, Facebook, Instagram, Contact lists, etc. Then import your data into Timelinize and it will organize and link your data together in ways you didn't think possible!

I just realized what I'm trying to do with @Timelinize for personal data/files/memories is what @Sourcegraph is doing for source code.

Just got the first feedback from one of our first alpha testers: "Wow!" "I tried the location history import from Google and this is already so fun." "I think this is super encouraging." "I think people are going to really like this."

With this walk in the forest, you can see the raw (pink) had considerable noise; our processed version preserves clarity and detail

We believe in personal data ownership. We're still figuring out pricing, but you will always be able to read timelines and access all the data in them without paying. Your timeline consists of a SQLite database and regular files on disk, so you won't even need Timelinize to read.

Wails is so cool. I'm using it to build @timelinize.
