What if multiplication fact practice could unlock more than answers?
In classrooms that use structured oracy and reflection, students do far more than recall times tables. They explain their thinking, compare strategies, challenge assumptions, and build real number sense. The result is confidence, fluency, and genuine understanding.
This short video shows how students use oracy to talk through their reasoning and how reflection helps them connect ideas, strengthen patterns, and grow their independence.
If you work in maths education, or you are curious about approaches that go beyond chanting and memorisation, this is worth a watch.
So, times tables/multiplication practice was always predicated on how many answers you got wrong. How about changing the parameter, so that when you practice you always get 100% right?
With the 'score' being how many you got right first time. Accuracy beating speed, difficulty also having a factor in the points you get.
Take a look how, using the Timbles 'Daily Challenge'. I guarantee you have not seen anything like this.
P.S the UK MTC is too constrained for my liking. Timbles is not for practicing the restrictive technical needs of the MTC. But give it to Y5, Y10, Adults and teachers even! and away they go. 😀
Times tables heat maps are great and all - EdShed have done them with millions of questions and I am pretty sure all such heatmaps will be similar.
But the data is even more useful and what it shows is really interesting, when comparing the difference in success between commutative facts.
Is 9x6 completed the same as 6x9? which was 'harder' and why?
At Timbles we are no so interested in speed, but in reasoning and understanding.

We might just be the first mathematics platform to do this, let alone tables practice app.
Students can now speak about their mathematical thinking on Timbles and get immediate feedback on their thinking - and teachers get summaries and activities based on the last 7 days of their class reflections.
Tap mic → speak → AI transcribes → review & edit → submit.
(No recordings kept).
Oracy in mathematics doesn't have to mean more work for teachers. It can just... happen!
And if you are not in a school class (maybe because you are an older learner or adult practicing) , no problem, you still get the functionality and the feedback.

No more of the same old same old!
If your child is tired of chanting times tables, filling in worksheets, and repeating the same exercises, they're not alone.
Timbles takes a different approach.
- Daily puzzles.
- Quick challenges.
- Instant feedback.
Just 5 minutes a day.
The result? Maths fact practice that children actually want to come back to.

IMPRESS TEACHERS IN SEPTEMBER
In most times tables practice, getting the right answer is the end of the story.
With Timbles, it’s just the start.
The “Say Why” feature asks learners to explain their thinking, helping them build confidence in communicating maths clearly, not just recalling facts.
So when your children return to school, they’re not just quicker at answers. They’re better at explaining them.
That’s the kind of progress teachers really notice.

Be honest… when was the last time you actively used your times tables?
For many adults, mental maths gets a little rusty over time. Not because we “can’t do it”, but because we simply don’t practise it.
Timbles is a 5-minute daily challenge designed to sharpen, and even improve those core multiplication facts and numeracy skills again, without feeling like schoolwork.
It’s quick, it’s structured, and it actually fits into a busy day.

Whether you’re helping kids with homework or just want to feel sharper with numbers again, a few minutes a day makes a difference.
☀️ Beat the Summertime Slide with Timbles!
Did you know that many children lose some of their maths confidence and fluency over the summer holidays?
The good news? Just 5 minutes a day can help keep those multiplication facts fresh and ready for September.
Timbles turns times table practice into a daily challenge that feels more like a game than homework.

Primary Teachers: How long do your students spend setting up digital math games before they actually solve a problem? Timbles strips away the avatars, dress-up shops, and gaming distractions. 100% of their time on Timbles is spent looking at and thinking about mathematics. Maximize your instructional minutes. Less time on irrelevant games - more time on maths. Does your current times table practice app (post MTC for UK schools) allow users to communicate about what they see? With Feedback? Timbles.com
Oracy and Math: "Talking to Think" - Can structured talk transform how children learn multiplication? We think so.
Our Oracy blog explores how Timbles' unique voice reflections and Oracy features encourage pupils to explain how they reached an answer. Verbalising mathematical thinking shifts knowledge from rote compliance to flexible, working mastery.

Spaced Repetition Science in Maths: Why do some children smash their times tables on Friday only to forget them by Monday?
It’s because massed practice (cramming) only hits short-term memory. Timbles uses advanced spaced repetition algorithms to track every single multiplication fact individually. The system automatically prompts students to practice the right fact at the exact moment they are about to forget it. Science-backed, classroom-proven. timbles.com/blog/spaced-repe…
"Failing Quietly."
In cognitive science, small mistakes followed by instant, low-stakes corrections are called desirable difficulties. Timbles is designed to avoid flashy red 'X' animations or loud buzzes when a child gets a question wrong - that concentrates on the mistakes and not the successes.
Instead, Timbles allows them to fail quietly, self-correct (which is the important part), and maintain momentum. Let's remove the anxiety from math fluency. timbles.com/blog/failing-qui…
Fluency Without Thinking Isn't Fluency: If a child instantly shouts out "42!" to 6×7 but has no idea why or how to use it to solve 6×70, do they actually possess mathematical fluency?
IMO True fluency runs through thinking, not around it. When children can reason ("I know 6×6=36, so 6×7 is just one more 6"), they build permanent cognitive hooks. Timbles balances rapid recall with conceptual reasoning paths. timbles.com/blog/times-table…
