I'm upping my p(doom)! Seriously, as the guy who first came up with the p(doom) concept (back in 2009), I am happy to see it entering the mainstream. There are p(doom) pop songs, music videos and dance crazes now! Also, crypto coins. Solana meme coins have been going crazy for p(doom) recently. Wow! Very P! Much doom!

With the uptick in activity, p(doom) coin investors have been encouraging me to get more involved. I've picked a coin to sponsor and plan to be investing some of my winnings in promotional activities. Don't worry - I will try to keep it tasteful - and not spam my subscribers with crypto-BS.

I did make a doom-related video in 2009. However it is pretty dated. My main promotional idea is to make a p(doom) Video - updating this one: youtu.be/kH31AcOmSjs

It's an upgrade, but the meaning is different - due to being more specific. I think I will just continue using "Machine Intelligence".

Of course, it is only simulated pain:
New paper: we found a pain direction in 25 open LLMs. It's distinct from fear and negative valence, and it fires for harm to the model but not to the user. Turn it up and models press a button to make it stop, even when the button deletes the user's files or their kids' photos.🧵

Homo Erectus went extinct. Homo Heidelbergensis went extinct. 99% of species go extinct. It's not that unusual.

He says that in 2026: "at no point in the tech stack of those AIs — neither in the transformer neural nets, nor in the GPU clusters they run on, nor in the training process, nor anywhere else — did anyone need to build in anything about self-reference." - but: Chain of Thought!

Feeding outputs back to the inputs is *exactly* what Hofstadter was talking about - in "I am a Strange Loop" - and elsewhere. He even gave the example of pointing a video camera at its own monitoring screen as an example. Scott is just out of the loop here.

Hofstadter said: "one thing that has completely surprised me is that these LLMs and other systems like them are all feed-forward. It's like the firing of the neurons is going only in one direction." ...

"And I would never have thought that deep thinking could come out of a network that only goes in one direction, out of firing neurons in only one direction. And that doesn't make sense to me, but that just shows that I'm naive."
