Overall, 25 people were killed in this massive Russian strike on Ukraine. One hundred people were injured. It was a combined attack, involving many ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as “shaheds.” This is the kind of “gift” Putin gave himself for his birthday. Ukrainian warriors shot down 44 missiles – both cruise and ballistic. Not all of those launched by Russia, and ballistic missiles are especially difficult to deal with. We suppressed 117 “shaheds” – most of those launched, but unfortunately, not all of them either. Additional packages of air defense missiles are needed, as are additional measures to support Ukraine. And there will be appropriate packages. The threat is there every day, and every day, our air defense batteries need to have missiles ready. We strongly count on prompt deliveries from our partners.

Does anyone remember this amazing story? On July 2, 1982, a truck driver from California flew 16,000 feet into the sky in a lawn chair. Larry Walters, 33, from San Pedro, had dreamed of flying his whole life. He bought 42 eight-foot helium weather balloons, tied them to a regular Sears lawn chair, strapped on a parachute, packed a BB gun to pop balloons to descend, a CB radio, sandwiches, and a six-pack of beer. He expected to float a few hundred feet above his backyard. He cut the rope and shot up like a rocket — to 16,000 feet. He drifted directly into the main approach path for LAX. Two airline pilots radioed the tower: they had just passed a man in a lawn chair holding a gun at 16,000 feet. For 45 minutes, he floated over Los Angeles, freezing cold, too scared to shoot balloons because he might fall. Finally, he started popping balloons one by one and slowly descended. He landed tangled in power lines in Long Beach, California, causing a blackout. When police arrested him, they asked why he did it. He said, "A man can't just sit around." The FAA fined him $4,000. He became a national folk hero — Lawnchair Larry — and inspired the movie Up.

“But the people in the streets completely changed the narrative.” It’s in Ukrainian, so I won’t translate the whole text, but the main point is an analysis of the media landscape, propaganda narratives, and deliberate disinformation attacks. Basically, it shows how many misinformation campaigns were launched against Fedorov over the past week and the percentage of their spread. The main conclusion is that once people took to the streets, the propaganda narrative on social media couldn’t compete with the real voices of the people, and the number of shares of those posts, as well as the number of publications, declined dramatically. It’s almost as if Ukrainians have a natural instinct to go out into the streets and talk to real people to understand what’s actually going on. And it helps. It always helps. It’s probably the only way to defeat the narrative, get out of the bubble, and hit the streets. It is unclear who precisely was behind these attacks on Fedorov. There were obviously some internal actors, but these statistics point out that a large number of russian Telegram channels were amplifying these attacks.
Life.ru, Vesti.ru,

I’m listening to an interview with a Russian Su-34 pilot who has been taking part in the war against Ukraine since the very first days. 🔴 He claims to have 1,400 combat sorties. The interview is more than 3 hours long. Some interesting points: 🔴 The Su-34 does not have secure, encrypted radio communications; according to him, this only appeared on the Su-34M. 🔴 On a standard Su-34, he mostly carried out missions using unguided munitions, while Su-34M aircraft, with secure communications, were used for missions involving the suppression of Ukrainian air defenses. 🔴 I don’t know how accurate this is, but according to him, on the very first night of the war he was sent to fly at 6,000 meters over Kyiv without a specific mission, then ordered to return. On the way back, he saw missiles heading toward Kyiv. He says he was used as bait to provoke Ukrainian air defenses and then strike them with missiles afterward. Knowing Russian command practices, this sounds plausible. According to him, older Su-34s were used in this way more than once. 🔴 He praises Ukrainian air defense, saying it is very well organized and decentralized. 🔴 The Buk-M1 was, in his view, the most effective Ukrainian air defense system in the early phase of the war. He does not give exact figures, but it becomes clear that Russian Air Force losses were much higher than what is commonly reported online, and a major share of that was due to the Buk system. 🔴 Ukrainian Buk units quickly changed positions and mounted their systems on semi-trucks, which significantly improved their mobility and speed of redeployment. 🔴 He also describes Ukrainian air defense tactics in an interesting way. According to him, Ukrainians realized they did not need to shoot down every enemy aircraft; instead, their goal was to down a few aircraft each time, and over time this created a cumulative effect. As a result, his combat group reportedly lost half of its aircraft during the battles for Kyiv (though he does not specify the unit size—whether a squadron or a regiment). 👍I’ll continue listening and taking notes throughout the day when I have time.
