With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's coronation coming at some point, I wanted to dive into MVP voting trends over time. Found some pretty stunning MVP voting numbers suggesting the groupthink problem is even bigger than we realized! A short thread:

Since the Assn’s stated criterion is “the player who has has the most positive impact on his team’s success during the regular season”, I’ll go w #2 since it is by far the closest.

That’s misleading Cory: Baylor played only 9 games in 71-72 ( The Lakers lost 3 of them). In the non-Baylor games, LAL/Sharman winning %age that year was 86.3

Since LBJ has such a big lead over everyone in career points scored, for the foreseeable future every point he scores will be the first time anyone has scored that many in total (even, odd, round #s, whatever). Been that way for quite some time.

50 on the nose too, and it brought Nets from down 7 at half time to win the game. A lot of the 50 was on Ricky Sobers, a very tough dude and defender. Nets had another decent scorer who took a back seat that night. Bernard King. He had 26. SUPE!

This talk of "revenge game" reminds me of 1 of the greatest. On 4/4/78, Nets guard Super John Williamson said he was going to "put 50 on Slick", the Pacers coach who had traded him back to the Nets that season. Supe shot 19-for-32 FGs and 12-for-13 FTs to fulfill that promise.
