10 years ago today, I added a new event to the mathematics education calendar with the very first MathsConf. On 14 June 2014, hundreds of mathematics teachers from primary, secondary and FE, gathered in Kettering for our first teacher-led conference. My vision for MathsConf was simple: create a platform for real classroom teachers to express their own theories and an environment where mathematics teachers form across the country could become friends. Next week, the 35th MathsConf will take place in Leicester. Tens of thousands of teachers from all over the UK and beyond have taken part in MathsConfs, which take place three times per year in venues across the country. When I reflect on my career in education, MathsConf is one of the highlights. I love hearing from teachers who have attended and have made new and lasting friendships at the conferences. In my introductory talk at the very first MathsConf, I said to the audience, “wouldn’t mathematics education be better if we all knew each other?” It’s great knowing that little idea grew into a huge number of mathematics teachers making new connections and having trusted friends across the country they can call on for advice, support and just good fun. So, a toast: to MathsConf! 🥂
