From the appointment of Election Commissioners to the deletion of voters from electoral rolls, critical constitutional questions remain unresolved. Our latest #CountingOnLaw column by @GokulSunoj @BhavyaSudhir42 and @SonOfRajkumar in @ThePrintIndia uses six years of Supreme Court cases to reveal a pattern of judicial deference, evasion and delays that often outlast the elections themselves. Watch @GokulSunoj explain their findings in 5 minutes. 👇 youtu.be/VhzweUkmD-0?si=380h…

Reading the SC's judgement in Yes Bank's AT1 bonds case. Really well written. 35 pages, issues clearly laid out, no unnecessary digression into why Banking Regulation Act exists, banking history, etc. Kudos! Check out this link for the judgement, a graphical timeline of the case, chat with it, etc. here: courtsdaily.info/case/356916… And here's a scathing paragraph that sums it all up.

Following the protest matters and Rahul Gandhi’s case against the ECI in the Supreme Court? Here’s everything in one place, including the ability to simply chat with the case instead of wading through long SC orders with an endless list of lawyers' names, see bench changes as the case progresses, navigate to tagged matters, set up alerts for new orders, generate reports, etc. Your One Place for Every Case: courtsdaily.info/case/506977… courtsdaily.info/case/530741…

The threat of contempt of court reminds me of ""यहाँ से 50-50 कोस दूर गाँव में, जब बच्चा रात को रोता है, तो माँ कहती है — बेटा सो जा, सो जा, नहीं तो गब्बर सिंह आ जाएगा।" But what actually happens in contempt cases? @ruchichic's piece uses data to examine the impact of this bogeyman.

When @bhargavizaveri and I started @theprofesseer, we had a bold thesis. Data has revolutionized every field, what makes the law so special. The idea was that citizens, lawyers, firms, court administrators, researchers etc would all benefit from this. Feels really good to see journalists make good use of our data!

@theprofesseer's data shows about 50% of the cases are just ‘disposed of’, another 31% dismissed and than 0.1 % allowed. In 0.2% cases, the contemnor is held guilty but no jail sentence given. 1.5% of cases were closed as the court accepted an apology, while 98% of cases are +

3 senior officials gave their apologies to #SupremeCourt in the contempt case relating to #DelhiProtests. But how often does the SC convict one of civil contempt for willful disobedience of orders? Records show punishment has been rare: less than 1% of cases end in jail/fine.

The NCLT website has been down since last night. If you’ve been refreshing it, here’s another tab worth opening. I'm always surprised how much people underestimate translating intelligence into action. You can hire the smartest humans (or agents). And still fail at building a firm or delivering things of value. Or being useful. Or doing something meaningful. The doomerism of "we will all have nothing to do" assumes that purpose exists in an absence of human will. But purpose and meaning are created. Willed into existence. And in the case I'm wrong, I will seek refuge in सम्प्राप्ते सन्निहिते काले न हि न हि रक्षति डुकृञ्करणे ॥ Because what else will be there to do except be philosophical about being a mudamathe.
Was chatting with @svembu ji this morning about limits of AI. I asked him what’s left for us once models commoditize reasoning. He said and I quote (with consent) - "Nature, Nurture, Culture, and Scripture." Liked that perspective. Intelligence is no longer the moat :)

The handling of the protestors yesterday by Bengaluru Police will be reviewed. The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy. It must be respected, protected and never suppressed. I have issued instructions to the police to ensure that no peaceful demonstration is disrupted. I also appeal to all protesters to cooperate with the police and keep the authorities informed, so that their safety and the rights of others are protected as well. The police are here to protect your rights, not to stand in the way of your voice. Our responsibility is not merely to maintain law and order, but to create an environment where every citizen can express dissent freely, peacefully and without fear. In a democracy, peaceful dissent is not a threat to law and order. It is a right that law and order must protect.

Foiled by paperwork. There's some meta-irony there given this is about SIR.
#BREAKING: Supreme Court Registry identified 14 defects in Lok Sabha LoP Rahul’s petition, including missing documents, incomplete authorisations for nine petitioners, a blurred copy of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s ID card and a ₹220 court-fee shortfall. The case can be listed for hearing after the defects are rectified

How appropriate. I'm sure the CJI will contextualise these remarks with what is happening in Delhi in this moment. Posterity will record what the judiciary said and did at moments like these.
NHRC FOUNDATION DAY 2026: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant is set to address the 33rd Foundation Day celebrations of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, shortly. The event marks the establishment of the NHRC on October 12, 1993

The legal basis of the entire dragnet thrown over central Delhi is an order under S. 163 of the BNS by an executive magistrate and nobody I have spoken to has seen a copy of this order. I'm not doubting its existence but the details in the order matter.

How to say "2.7% inflation" but make it sound scary.
A $100,000 salary in 2000 has the same purchasing power as $194,530 in 2026, per YF

X/Twitter has become a really strong reinforcing echo chamber. One tweet on avatar and my timeline is flooded. And it's repetitive. It was good at first... But it feels overdone now.
