Album Review for Westside Whimsy by Jhené Aiko You know, one thing that always impresses me is how artists will not make a solo project in years and then will come back and not miss a single step. Jhené also has really carved a lane with what I like to call “Pillow-Talk Pop”. She be talking that shit but then it’s also sensual at times as well. The whole album essentially comes to a point of basically asking out loud as you listen… “The fuck did Big Sean do?” Brother you can’t be a bad as a boyfriend AND a rapper, you gotta pick one. Overall though this album is definitely in a place where one is working through heartache and while grieving what was once had and how to essentially move on from it. The album itself is 56 minutes of an emotional roller coaster that brings you through all of the emotions of pain, heartbreak, acceptance and even a little bit of a bright side as well. Her voice is very tantalizing and smooth as she goes from a pop to an R&B sound. The cohesiveness of her seamlessly fits from track to track and whether she’s in an upbeat or emotional downbeat mood, the vibes are essentially consistent throughout. Whether she’s soul searching on “A Living Light” or calling out the bullshit on “Ceiling”, the album is full of that synth west coast R&B that is full of vibrant energy. The pacing of the album does have some things that could not be necessary like a Tyga feature, and….. yeah that’s about it. From the smooth production that has some solid chords, drums, strings and synths, to the emotional lyrics and melodies, this is a pretty solid album from front to back and it’s worth your time. Big Sean, thank you for being a shitty human because sometimes the hurt music sounds best. Final Score: 8.5/10
