Wow – great set of interactions today with a large group of students and faculty associated with our @NUFeinbergMed during our annual Lewis Landsberg Research Day, facilitated by my keynote presentation, titled “Improving Patient Care through Collaborative Efforts at the Interface Between Engineering and Medicine.” In this talk, I highlighted a few of the large number of collaborations that connect our two institutes, the @NU_QSIB and the @NU_QSITEAMS to the broader medical community here – engineering science in the service of medical practice! To illustrate the scale of our collaborative efforts, I compiled a list of faculty and staff co-authors on papers that we’ve published through our institutes over the last 3 years – senior clinicians and medical researchers! We’re very fortunate to have the chance to work with such high-quality people, in interdisciplinary activities that create a deep, rich educational environment for the students and postdocs – my main mission as a faculty member. I am told that I’m the first internal keynote speaker for this event, over the two decades of its existence. Thanks to Prof. Rex Chisholm for inviting me and thus taking a chance on something a bit different this year, and thanks to Prof. Eric Neilson, our medical school dean, for hosting me! Very much also appreciate the efforts of Melanie Kruchten and Haleigh Ehmsen for setting up the agenda and making all of the various arrangements. What a day and what an excellent opportunity to ‘advertise’ our capabilities and track record as the basis for additional collaborations in the future!

When muscle membranes leak: doi.org/10.1172/jci.insight.…
Elizabeth M. McNally @emmcnally & team @NUFeinbergMed discover muscle lacking two proteins critical for resealing damaged sarcolemma (dysferlin & annexin A6) cause leaky membranes and invite macrophages to come take a bite.
The image shows an ex vivo phagocytosis assay, using LysoTracker-labeled WT macrophages incubated with myofibers isolated from dysferlin-deficient mice, demonstrating impaired membrane repair generates enhanced “eat-me” signals.

Jesse T. Davidson, MD, participated in a Northwestern Medicine study highlighting the role of type 1 conventional dendritic cells in organ transplantation. This study lays the groundwork for treatments that could transform the transplant landscape. It also calls attention to the fact that understanding immune mechanisms in organ transplantation is vital in the development of strategies that enhance long-term survival.
