On the 16th, the International Sumo Federation announced that former Yokozuna Hakuho Sho has assumed the position of president. Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, had served as president since September of last year. Hakuho retired from the Japan Sumo Association in June of last year, continued his activities aiming to have sumo recognized as an Olympic sport, and also served as an advisor to the federation.
In a statement released on the federation's official website, Hakuho commented, "I have been entrusted with this important baton by former President Akio Toyoda and have now taken on the monumental role of President of the International Sumo Federation." He further shared his feelings upon taking office, stating, "To me, sumo is life itself. Through sumo, I have learned the importance of hard work, respecting others, gratitude, and confronting adversity. I believe it is now my turn to give back to sumo."
Additionally, sharing his aspirations as the new chairman, he stated, "While cherishing the traditions, spirit, and values of sumo, I want to convey the appeal of sumo to even more countries and regions around the world, passing it on to children and the younger generation. Furthermore, working together with everyone involved in sumo around the globe, transcending differences in country, culture, and language, I believe my mission is to 'unite the world through sumo.'"
