Real banger here. We often treat descriptive analysis as a petty chore you need go through to get to the real (causal) stuff. Gerring argues that not only is good description crucial, it’s arguably the greater challenge. Deciding how to characterize things appropriately can be more consequential and difficult than establishing that X is related to Y in a particular way. cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Macro-level Social Structures
Drawing on different theoretical traditions and offering various kinds of arguments, these books seek to develop knowledge about the big structures that shape the lives of people.
They inspired me in graduate school and continue to motivate me.
"Seneca observed that the minds of those who read too many scrolls too quickly became restless and unsteady. This kind of mind was less able, he noted, to “stay in one place and spend time with itself.” Sarah-Jane Murray
I’m excited to share my essay in The New York Times this morning! “About 2000 years ago, the Roman philosopher Seneca warned of a crisis of attention.” With thanks to my editor, James Ryerson.

Now reading this new suggestive book by @TK_Sakurai on Erich Fromm's theory of fascism. As Sakurai explains, for Fromm, individuals with evident sadistic and masochistic inclinations tend to show a "propensity toward authoritarianism."
