Other editors will make your content flashy. Unnecessary visuals that look nice. Unnecessary sfx that sound great. Everything polished, nothing intentional. And it'll perform like it looks - fine. I've edited 3000+ videos. Dozens of them sitting at 50k, 100k, millions of views. Going viral isn't just one thing. It's the niche, the topic, the timing, the thumbnail, the algorithm. But when all of that lines up - editing is what determines whether it explodes or gets buried. It's the difference between a viewer leaving at 4 seconds and watching till the end. I've seen what looks like it works and what actually works. The unnoticeable half-second cuts that keep the flow without the viewer ever feeling them. The sound design that keeps people engaged without ever distracting them. The pacing that holds attention without throwing unnecessary visuals at it. The hook structure that makes people stop the scroll right there. None of it is random. All of it is intentional. And I didn't learn this in a course. I learned it by editing. Every single day. Across niches, formats, platforms - finance, travel, gaming, business, lifestyle. Short form, long form. Channels with 100 subscribers and channels with millions. Every project taught me something. Every video I look at now I already know what's going to hold attention and what's going to lose it before I even make the first cut. That's not something you can fake.

editors, what’s one tiny change to your workflow that saved you a stupid amount of time? a shortcut, a preset, a folder system. anything. the boring stuff deserves some credit

taking a week to finish an edit doesn't mean you spent a week editing. searching for assets. changing the music again. rebuilding something you've already made before. before you try to edit faster, figure out where the time actually goes.

Video editors, put some effort into how you present your work. When someone sends me a Google Drive link to show me their edits, I don’t even open it. Maybe I’m missing out on great work, but the presentation has already put me off. If you care so much about making your edits look amazing, why present them like that? My first impression is that you couldn’t be bothered to build a proper portfolio. That might be unfair, but first impressions happen before anyone presses play. Now think about the impression you’re making when you reach out to potential clients. You’re selling a visual skill. Your portfolio should reflect that. You don’t need an expensive website or crazy animations. A clean page with your best work, what you do, and a way to contact you is enough. There are so many free tools and templates available. Especially if you’re a beginner, make it easy for someone to give your work a chance. You put hours into making your edits look good. Put some of that effort into presenting them.

here's what "editing" actually looks like raw footage vs. finished intro

your client shouldn't have to message you to find out if the video is getting done. send the update. flag the delay early. make the next step clear. being good to work with is part of being a good editor.
