I’m a middle-class woman in my thirties. I have a good career, a comfortable life and a degree of financial security that gives me choices many others don’t have. I’m well aware that I’m fortunate, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. Many of the issues raised in J.K. Rowling’s latest essay are less likely to affect me directly than they might other women. But why on earth should that make them any less important to me? If I need healthcare, I may be able to access alternatives. If I disagree with an institution’s decisions, I have the education, confidence and potentially the means to challenge them. Not everyone has that luxury. And circumstances can change quickly. Importantly, a comfortable life is hardly a permanent magical shield. I don’t have to be a woman in prison to care about the rights of female prisoners, or a woman seeking refuge after sexual violence to believe single-sex services not only matter, but are vital in society. Nor do I have to find myself vulnerable on a hospital ward, or be a nurse required to change at work, to understand why privacy, dignity and safeguarding are important. What troubles me is the expectation that women should accept the erosion or reinterpretation of their sex-based rights without question, and that objecting somehow makes them unreasonable, intolerant or hateful. I believe biological sex matters. Women are entitled to privacy, dignity and safety, and single-sex provisions are and entirely reasonable necessity. I also believe trans people deserve dignity, safety and protection from discrimination. That doesn’t require me to abandon biological reality or my support for safeguarding measures based on sex. Then there’s the law. The Supreme Court clarified the meaning of sex under the Equality Act in 2025. Yet disputes continue over how institutions apply that judgment. What happens to women who cannot afford those battles? It shouldn’t require a legal team, financial security and the patience of a saint to exercise rights enshrined in law. And this is where class matters. Those with the greatest influence over institutional policies aren’t necessarily the people who must live with their consequences. Those with the least choice are often expected to accommodate decisions they had little influence over. That is profoundly unfair. I’m not an activist. I’m somewhat introverted, I don’t have a significant public following, nor would I particularly want one. I have no desire to make myself a public figure. But I have opinions. Quite strong ones, as it happens. And I have a voice. One that my own conscience insists I use. I don’t presume to speak for every woman. Women aren’t a monolith, and we’re perfectly capable of disagreeing. I don’t expect everyone to share my views, any more than I expect to share theirs. But I do expect to be able to express mine. And I believe those of us who can speak have a moral obligation to do so, particularly when others cannot. As for Rowling, I don’t agree with an argument simply because she makes it. I have profound respect for her, but she’s a woman, not a deity. I respect that she had no personal need, with her current circumstance, to enter this debate, yet chose to because of her convictions. I don’t need to be personally disadvantaged to recognise something is wrong. I don’t need to know the women affected, or have anything to gain from defending their rights. My current circumstances aren’t a reason to care less. If anything, they make me more conscious of why those rights matter. I’d rather use my voice to defend something I believe in than stay conveniently silent simply because the consequences are less likely to land on my own doorstep.

There is a widespread amnesia to a widespread cultural norm in UK 🇬🇧 especially older women about bodily privacy when in states of undress, which mean we exclude all of the opposite sex except very close relatives and medical professionals. This is a need by many in hospitals
Why are UK hospitals sex-segregated? Seems insane!

Big shifts underway ⬇️ Government departments that have been "working at pace" 🐌 to revise their policies to bring them into line with FWS have finally done so. The old model policy staff may use facilities based on “gender identity and expression” and individuals know “which facilities are the best match for their gender identity”. The new policy says staff should use facilities for the their biological sex, or single-user unisex facilities where these are available.
NEW: Several government departments have released new policies on trans-identifying civil servants and service personnel. These policies restore single-sex spaces but retain gender-identity language. sex-matters.org/posts/update…

Next week, for @FiLiA_charity I am speaking in defence of Equality Act focusing on women’s interests. In doing so I’ve read various reports from opponents. But interested in wider views. For those genuinely opposed to EA or aspects of it, please kindly summarise your thinking.

Yesterday I attended the @ChtyCommission annual public meeting online. I typed in a question on the Equality Act and waited and waited... it was never asked. Two other charity people told me their questions on the Equality Act were also "held in review". It is not 2018! We are allowed to talk about this.

Actually there were considerable numbers of grassroots women’s organisations campaigning for single sex wards, same sex intimate care etc but women’s voices are clearly too shrill
There was almost no organic public element in this. It was simply imposed upon Britain by the world’s most hateful and poisonous media outlets, who leaned very hard on our ever-compliant political leaders, ever eager to say yes to the tabloids.

Let's decipher what @NadiaWhittomeMP is saying here: "I am pleased to continue denying women their rights to single-sex spaces. I do not understand that women's rights are workers' rights too. Trade unions should keep working together to take sex-based rights away from women."
Many constituents have contacted me, devastated by the University of Nottingham’s decision to approve plans to close modern languages and music degrees, cut support services and end one-to-one personal tutoring. Not only will this decision impact livelihoods and opportunities for students, but it will have wider cultural and economic implications for our city, region and international relations. Throughout this period, I have stood in solidarity with striking staff and met with university leaders, urging them to protect jobs and courses. It is not too late for the leadership to engage with @UoNUCU and its detailed counter-proposals.

Doctors harm children with unevidenced treatments. Safeguarding leads try to raise the alarm. Senior doctors silence and punish them. The doctors' regulator doesn't see a problem. The rot is too wide and deep for individual cases. We need a public inquiry.

For 18 months, NHS Trusts have cited the absence of @NHSEngland guidance as a reason for delaying changes to their policies. That excuse can no longer be used. Every NHS organisation must now review its policies, make the necessary changes and demonstrate how it is complying with the law. We expect clear deadlines and accountability.
NEW: NHS guidelines require staff facilities and patient accommodation on the basis of biological sex. @MForstater: “Today’s new guidelines are very welcome... the policies themselves represent a momentous shift back to reality”. dailymail.com/news/article-1…

The single sex exceptions are there because Parliament recognised that if we only had mixed spaces/services/sports, some people, usually women would self exclude. This may amount to unlawful sex discrimination
Replying to @SarahLudford
People don't have rights because of their sex. The whole principle of feminism, and equality in general, is that people have equal rights regardless of their sex.

Today begins the pre-legislative scrutiny of the Conversion Practices Bill. Currently it's the law that the Female category in sport means biological sex. With this Bill, will event organisers or sports club officials be criminalised for not "affirming a gender identity"?

I’d like to hear from these politicians who “accept the SC judgment” but think the EHRC code of practice is “unworkable” precisely how they’d reduce the judgment into “workable” guidance. And I do mean precisely.

🚨🚨🚨 Anybody who wants to continue living in a pluralistic society please sit up & take notice of the draft Conversion Practices Bill. It is truly extraordinary and not in a good way. Pre-legislative scrutiny starts on Monday. It is serious & #thisisnotadrill 🚨🚨🚨
Don't miss. It's difficult to overstate how important it is to defeat the proposed Conversion Practices legislation.

Some of us are 60 year old female Equality lawyers. We understand when the latest “terminology” of activists on sex and gender is inconsistent with what the Equality Act actually says. Also the consequential effect that has on vulnerable women.
“Here on Radio 4 many of our audience are over 60. They don’t understand the terminology [of sex and gender] …” A very foolish age-based line to draw. Women of 60 are women of working age who must understand responsibilities, liabilities and rights at work under equality law
